Philip Lahm ovverated?
With Lahm announcing his retirement, where do you guys rank him amongst the great right full backs that have played the game?
Honestly, I think he has become very ovverated. I've seen some posts in other forums saying he is arguably the best right back in history alongside Cafu. Outrageous. For me he was consistent, and gave a 7-8 performance most times but his peak level never approached the likes of Maicon, Cafu and Alves. He was intelliegent but for me. It would be like comparing Irwin to Roberto Carlos.

Re: Philip Lahm ovverated?
I rate him very high mostly due to him being very intelligent. Not the best by any stretch of imagination though.

Re: Philip Lahm ovverated?
Him paling in comparison to Cafu doesn't mean he's overrated. In fact, everybody in your list pales in comparison to Cafu because he was in a league of his own.
But I really don't see why Lahm shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Alves or Maicon. He's definitely up there with the best RBs of the "modern" era.
The first tier though is reserved for guys like Santos, Cafu and Alberto. Guys that we shall never see their likes again.

I would place Alaves above Lahm though.

Agreed with Jibers here tbh
I don't think he was better than Dani Alves at any point nor his peak was better than Maicon's peak.

Prime Dani Alves is goat RB. Better than Cafu, Calros Alberto, Zanetti etc
And yes Lahm is not in their level.

Re: Philip Lahm ovverated?
Now that's an overrated Alves. Cafu, Alberto, Maicon all way better than Alves. And someone earlier put Alves and Intelligence in same sentence! That's just illogical.
I agree Lahm is good, very good, but agree (for once) with Jibers.

Alves could replicate what all those full backs did although he would be worse in some areas, particularly shielding the ball like Cafu. He doesn't have the pace and power of Maicon. None of those full backs could replicate what Alves did. None of them are close to his skill level.
As for Lahm, I see him as a better version of Carvajal.

Re: Philip Lahm ovverated?
Did intelligence become a new metric for measuring players since Pep called Lahm a smart player?
If you are talking about tactical intelligence, as in him being able to adapt to other positions, well, isnt that irrelevant if we are comparing him to the Maicon and Alves of this world?

Re: Philip Lahm ovverated?
Thing about Alves is I don't rate him much defensively. Defensively all of the above mentioned fullbacks at their prime was better than him.
I consider Djalma Santos as the greatest RB of all time btw.

Alves doesn't defend well enough to be among the best. I'd take Lahm any day of the week, prime Maicon as well obviously.

Re: Philip Lahm ovverated?
lahm's not overrated, he's the best rb of his generation, granted there aren't many to choose from. and alves above maicon, there was a time maicon was benching alves, and maicon at that stage was more reliable on defense.....however the way bale stripped maicon off his powers, and maicon never recovered from that was just crazy. from that point onwards he shouldn't have been benching alves anymore. i'd rather stick with comparing the guys who played in the same era. maicon was never the same again after that spurs encounter, he just wasn't.

Sees 'some posts in other forums' saying 'player x is the best of all time'
concludes that the player is 'overrated'
jibers not your proudest moment

Re: Philip Lahm ovverated?
He's overrated if you consider him the best of his generation because he isn't.
He's clearly always been an elite though, also Alves at his best ability to defend is vastly understated or more so his peers are overrated at that particularly.
Maicon especially, i mean his own treble winning manager said he wasn't a defender As for Lahm his defensive ability is also a bit overhyped tbh ( even if he's still better than his peers overall), he had good positional sense, awareness and decision making off the ball but one v one and as individual defender he's worse than Alves and Maicon easily.
If i were to go further Lahm was probably better than both overall at passing and technical skills ( thus his relative success at a midfield role) but he wasn't as explosive as either offensively.

Frankly it's incredible to number of elite fullbacks who we could see (we've just lost Zanetti and Lahm in last 2 years ) .. if I think now .. probably we got the golden age on this role . Lahm is part of them . I don't think he was overrated .
probably if he 'd played for another team beyond the Bayern , another league etc he'd got even more tributes

Re: Philip Lahm ovverated?
Maybe most people here see Zanetti as a LB since thats where he played after Maicon joined Inter.
Majority of his career he played RB, he should be recognized as one of the greatest of all time. In my eyes he is better than all three of Lahm, Alves and Maicon.

His passing and technical skills are a level below Alves. the quick one twos in tight areas and actually breaking lines, Alves is the best full back.

Re: Philip Lahm ovverated?
I dunno, i think Lahm's close control and first touch is better tbh as is his short passing.
Alves is a better at dribbling and passing over 10 yards though.

Agree tbh. I was just exaggerating. The thing is Lahm never looked out of position because he never had to over commit in attack. Bayern were a counter attacking team and he played lb regulalry till LVG came then they started using his position game. As I said, I see Lahm as a superior version of Carvajal. Alves did things that I havent seen a rb do. Marcelo is the only one comparable in this generation.

Re: Philip Lahm ovverated?
Dani once put it nicely re: Alves:
The Franchise wrote:Maicon to me was a really great "normal" fullback.
When I say normal I mean like, if you were to create a fullback in the lab it might come out something like Maicon.
Tall, fast, strong, great control, can dribble, runs all day, amazing overlaps and tremendous crossing with an ability shoot from distance.
But Dani Alves is different, he misses some things Maicon had (power, size) but he does things a normal fullback wouldnt even compute. He play's 1-2, sometimes more than 1 in a row, he dribbles inside, he makes passes like a midfielder (with both feet) such as through balls and chipped passes. He has legitimate midfield skills combined with extraordinary physical capability.
Maicon did everything a fullback should do (going forward), Dani Alves did things you dont expect a fullback to.

Cafu was the first modern fb of his ilk.
Zanetti, Zambrotta, Lahm, Alves, Maicon, Gary Neville, Thuram. All the best full backs, although again to be pedantic, it would depend on the system.

Lahm is a Bayern legend and one of the best fullbacks of the 2000s/2010s.
Nothing more.
