Alex Neil and Arsene Wenger press conferences
Scouting report by Michael Cox
Norwich City may be only two places above the relegation zone and won just one of their last eight games, but recent narrow one-goal defeats away to Manchester City and Chelsea suggest they make it tough for the big boys.
Alex Neil has created a solid, structured side with good organisation and an ability to counter quickly down the flanks. Arsenal should enjoy the majority of possession this weekend, but will have to be wary of direct Norwich attacks.
John Ruddy is protected by a settled back four boasting Ryan Bennett and Sebastian Bassong in the centre - the latter is particularly commanding in the air. Russell Martin, Andre Wisdom and Steven Whitaker have all played on the right with Martin Olsson at left-back - they tuck in, and minimise the space on the outside of the centre backs, showing the opposition wide.
In midfield, Neil has played a number of different systems and combinations, but is most likely to play a 4-4-1-1. The tough-tackling Alex Tettey is a slight injury doubt but should be fit to anchor the midfield, with Jonny Howson set to play more of a box-to-box role, and pop up on the edge of the box unnoticed. He performed excellently in a 4-1 defeat at the Emirates two years ago, scoring a fine goal from the edge of the area.
Jonny Howson
Out wide, Robbie Brady offers plenty of stamina and decent crosses, but the greater threat comes from right-sided Nathan Redmond, who has managed four goals this season despite starting just eight league games. That’s a particularly helpful return considering neither of the options for the lone striker role, Cameron Jerome or Dieumerci Mbokani, are prolific, although both hold up the ball effectively.
Norwich’s key man, though, will be central playmaker Wes Hoolahan. Only Mesut Ozil and Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez have provided more Premier League assists this season, and in the absence of the injured Francis Coquelin, Arsenal will have to ensure they don’t leave space between the lines.
The Gunners must also defend dead-ball situations well - only Tottenham have managed more set-piece goals than Norwich this season.

A view from the other side:

Alex said at the AGM last night that he is willing to modify his attacking policy to ensure we survive in the league, was that with one eye on the upcoming fixture?
Do we play them like we played Man City and Chelsea away? Or do we say F-you Arsenal, we're the home side, bring it!?
Canaryboy wrote:Arsenal sides always look really lightweight to me so my only idea is to fill our eleven with our hardest players and kick them.
Lafferty was good at taking players out with two feet from behind in the Old Firm games, so maybe just start him and borrow Bradley Johnson for the day?
We aren't going to win the possession game, and we aren't going to beat them for pace, so setting out like we did against Chelsea for the first 75 minutes and then trying to smash and grab at the end if it goes well sounds like a plan to me.
I'm actually being half serious though, Arsene Wenger always used to have a big old moan about Stoke not letting them get the ball down and play so lets go full-on Tony Pulis and have our players watching videos of Shawcross and Whelan on repeat.
dj161 wrote:Arsenal are a funny side to play against, you need to press them and not let them have any time on the ball, yet at the same time you can't go pressing to hard as they can quite easily pull you out of shape/position and exploit the gap that has been left, for me we need to start with Tettey-Mulumbu partnership in the center of midfield for this one, as we need some real ball winners in there if we're to stand any chance, and as mentioned above with the lack of a top defensive mid in the Arsenal side the best bet could be balls over the top to try and get behind them, I'd quite like to see us play Jerome-Mbokani together up front to see if the Arsenal defence could deal with balls over the top with those two's strength and hold up play to deal with, yet at the same time I want Redmond to play to bring that bit of pace in to our counters
Fenway Frank wrote:I admire the way Arsenal play, just a shame that their supporters suffer from the level of arrogance known only to those that follow the top four or five clubs.
Killiecanary wrote:I can see a repeat of the Swansea tactics at home more the Man Citeh away...concede ground, compress the space in our final third, try to go long when we do get a chance to try and turn their back line which I agree is their weakest area. I agree with dj above - if we let Arsenal draw us out too far they will stretch us.

Routine 2-0 away win. We need to put the last few league games behind us.
Man City play Soton
Leicester and United play each other
Ans it's Spurs vs Chelsea
So somewhere we'll make up ground or distance ourselves, we just need to win.

Re: Norwich vs Arsenal PL 15/16
Sorry guys for dropping by unannounced. I just wanted to pat urbaNroots on the back for his shrewd and amazing match preview. As a poster, I really like the opening post to be easy on the eyes and rich in content.
I think every poster should do like this when creating a matchday thread. And let's say you can't or don't have time to do it like this, at least make sure to respect a few simple rules:
1. Capitalize every first letter of each word in the title.
2. Attach a picture of the game poster.
3. State the avenue, date and (if possible) the referee.
4. Mention the injuries, probable lineup and the latest information that you can glean from the pre-game press conference.
Thank you urbaNroots, and I hope we all follow your example. Good luck to both Norwich and Arsenal and may the best win!

Urban just copies and pastes though. And then adds the cool colours and font sizes. Not that I don't appreciate the effort of course.

On topic: the LEI_MU draw was a perfect result for us. Need to capitalize and grab those 3 points.

Wouldn't mind you lot winning 5-0 tbh. I've got Koscielny, bellerin and most importantly Ozil on my fantasy team.
Don't mess this one up like last week.

Two more than decent chances worked down the left hand side, but both scuffed by Ozil and Giroud.

Goal! A poor clearance from Ruddy is intercepted by Alexis, who slips in Ozil, who dinks it over the keeper.

Re: Norwich vs Arsenal PL 15/16
And it's now 1-1 after some horrible defending from Gabriel, as he's turned very easily in the box by Grabban, who slots in the equaliser.
Against the run of play but for us it's not surprising.

Re: Norwich vs Arsenal PL 15/16
very poor from Gabriel, should have been stronger. He was just brushed aside and he offered little resistance. It's like he expected a foul or something.
Defensively our right hand side is very poor, Ramsey is not interesting in covering Bellerin, he keeps coming inside instead of staying wide so the team has a better shape and Bellerin doesn't know where to position himself when they come forward. This is similar to the West Brom game, all we had to do was not concede but we make it difficult for ourselves by conceding such cheap goals. I hope Ozil, Sanchez create something so we can get the 3 points but our defending doesn't fill me up with confidence at the moment. You just get the feeling that we will give them another in this game.

Re: Norwich vs Arsenal PL 15/16
We're not stopping crosses coming in, either, which is surely the best way Norwich are going to make chances. We almost conceded another one before half-time like that.
It's this sort of thing that really makes me doubt our title challenge. We need to be playing with a lot more authority in these games. The last three goals we've conceded should not happen.
