But former Chile coach Sampaoli has not shied away from making big selection calls. The 57-year-old has a star-studded forward line to choose from. But he will not be able to call on Juventus forward Gonzalo Higuain, who was left out in favour of Mauro Icardi.

'It's to do with the analysis of what happened with the national team last time,' Sampaoli explained. 'We need a striker who, as well as goals, has the characteristics of an assist-maker. That's we why called him up.

'We're facing a reality in which we are left outside of Russia and, with little time left, we have to take advantage of every virtue in this squad.

'When we talked with Gonzalo, we told him why we didn't call him up. We told him that we're hopeful of there being an argument that he can be with us again.'

Who would not choose Icardi over Higuain ?

GOLZALO HIGUAIN will score 30+ goals with Juve and he'll be content with that, the national team is a curse for him.

Please like being excluded from the NT is a big deal. He would easily make the team of any country but Argentina is simply stacked in that position.

Higuain is way better than Muller, the guy who scored 5 goals in Bundesliga last season. 5 rofl

Anyways Muller is only rated because he's not that good but still has no major flaw. We are not in 2013 anymore, Germany has no CF and that's why they lost the last Euro.

Higuain is clearly better than him . I rate him - still- as best Serie A CF.
Belotti is very good but Higuain Icardi Dzeko are above him.

I also rate Higuain over Belotti, but I don't think its hilarious to not do so. Unlike with Muller for example.

we are not talking about making the 1st team, we are talking about making the squad. He would 100% make the squad for all the countries you listed.

Also he would probably start over all of those except Kane.

He wouldn't make the France squad... mainly because Deschamps wants a skilled/quick striker who can move in and out of the box and play multiple positions. Giroud is the only hold out from that mold because he won't stop scoring and being effective for France. But fairly soon, it's going to be Mbappe/Griezmann on top imo. Lemar and Dembele will be the wing players in the 442.

Lacazette, Mbappe, Giroud, Dembele, Griezmann and either one of Thauvin/Coman/Fekir are virtual locks. Payet is still out there too.

Culture is a big thing for DD too... so a guy who comes in with an over-inflated idea of his status would be a non starter to begin with.

I don't believe anyone ever blamed Messi for not winning a WC, but I think it's opportunistic to put all of the blame on Higuaín for the same reason. Many people talk about Argentina as if they have such a brilliant national team that they're practically entitled to winning everything they compete in, and in contrast, some people also blame that very same team of not being good enough to compliment Messi's abilities.

If Messi is indeed such a dominant player that the rest of the team aren't fit to tie his boots, then surely a single player who's not performing up to par should not be a case of a straw that breaks the camel's back. If everyone but Messi is the problem, then guess what? Tough luck. No world cup winner ever had the privilege of being able to pick his team mates. It's not as if Messi was cursed with being born in a weak football nation, either.
