Re: GAME OF THRONES - PART 6 - *NO BOOK TALK - READ THE RULES*
- Spoiler:
- Had forgotten that, been so long since I've read that book. Point about Stannis not actually being as stubborn as people like to portray him still stands though. It all comes from that stupid quote by the Maester who knew the Baratheon boys and who talked about Stannis breaking before he would bend. That one character's opinion has come to overrule all the evidence of Stannis' personality.
All this being said, the show can still be independently great by taking a different path. It's going to be fun watching Davos wreak havoc as a free agent.

dostoevsky wrote:Stannis' portrayal in the show is nothing short of incompetent writing. D&D fundamentally don't understand and like him, leading to the nonsense we saw on screen.
The reason why there was a massive fan backlash wasn't because Shireen was sacrificed. Everyone knew she was eventually going to be sacrificed BUT not by her own father. Stannis is doing all of this to put her on the Iron Throne one day after he passes.
The very reasoning for why he did this only shows that D&D can only see things in black and white. They say that Stannis can be explained and represented simply as someone who cannot change his decision. Except when he is going to punish Davos for releasing Gendry. Or when he says that he won't sacrifice Shireen.
(From books)
- Spoiler:
Or when he executes Mance Rayder, except it's actually Rattleshirt disguised with a glamour because he realises Mance is more use to him alive than dead.
Would Stannis use king's blood to save the realm? You bet. The thing is though, Westeros is full of other nice, juicy sacrifices he could easily make instead of HIS OWN HEIR.
He doesn't have any other kings blood near him though. He is trapped and forced to do this because what are the other options? Starvation and mutiny, including the death of Shireen, Stannis himself, thousands of people in his army. He did the sacrifice because he needs to sit on the Iron Throne before the Long Night, and that's ultimately more important than one life even if it's his beloved daughter's life.

Re: GAME OF THRONES - PART 6 - *NO BOOK TALK - READ THE RULES*
As great as the shows is, Stannis like several other people had what turned out to be a really weak ending tbh. Start out strong, get a bit stronger then spend 2 seasons getting weaker and weaker then get gimped out at the end. It's funny when you look back at individual story arcs and realise how pointless they were in the grand scheme of things it makes me bring back my repressed memories of Drogo and how he looked like an OP warlord but before you know it without doing anything he gets man flu and dies.
Back to Plebbis, Supposedly the greatest war tactician in Westeros and if you take away an OP smoke baby killing his Brother and taking his army he was a complete pleb. 5 year old Danaerys or htf you spell her name is twice the thinker he was. Don't think he made one solid great tactical decision and executed it without the use of magic.

That itself is a contrived situation by D&D. As for dealing with hardship, Stannis endured essentially the greatest siege in Westeros' history during Robert's Rebellion. What he faced on the way to Winterfell was child's play in comparison - until, of course, 20 good men came along.

Of course it's a contrived situation by the showrunners, like how Robert died just before Ned could tell him about Cersei's bastard children, like how Robb was set up to visit the Freys, how Tywin arrived JUST in time to end the Battle of Blackwater or how Stannis JUST arrives North of the Wall in time before Mance slits Jon Snow's throat.
And the Siege of Storm's End was not NEAR as bad a situation as the one Stannis suffered in the North. First of all, Stannis had strong walls around him and was not freezing as well as starving to death at the same time. He had to feed like 10,000-15,000 men as opposed to the 200-300 he had in Storm's End.

Re: GAME OF THRONES - PART 6 - *NO BOOK TALK - READ THE RULES*
Except all of those instances were part of the original story - and are also the product of feasible and explicit decisions made by other important characters that made the situations plausible. D&D dramatically alter the circumstances of Stannis' end. There's nothing inherently wrong with them altering details but you also then have to ask, did their changes improve the story? I strongly feel they didn't. If you feel differently, then fair enough.
You can't view the sieges based simply on the number of men. Stannis had far greater opportunity to prepare for the march to Winterfell. He's no longer reeling from the defeat at the Blackwater, he's now the supported candidate of the Bank of Braavos with the men and supplies needed for such an assault. He has a means of retreat if necessary and most crucially has to endure this situation for far less time than the situation at Storm's End. This isn't to suggest that Stannis' situation wasn't dangerous, however he's previously demonstrated an incredible capacity for endurance.
All of which is thrown away so that he can give up everything for a blood magic that Stannis is sceptical about in any case and all so that he can meekly succumb in a way that is cheaper to film.

Watch the History and Lore vids for each season LeVer, they're about an hour each and they delve deeper in the world, plus the art is amazing and its narrated by the cast

'After the Thrones' will air every week on HBO Now discussing the most recent episode, storylines and characters.
Surprised this wasn't a thing until now. Hopefully it wont be as awful as The Talking Dead.

Ironically, the easiest way is to stream it illegally but if you are in the UK, Germany or Italy you can watch it on Sky Atlantic. Of course you have to pay for the whole package instead of just Game of Thrones episodes which sucks.
