In theory they can , yes . But how did that work out for us already ? Niang and Honda are no wingers and both were a failed expirement at the right wing. Pls no more. Both can be valuable individuals in their own right if we finally start using them correctly , Niang at CF and Honda at AM .

Bonaventura often did ok on the wing , but he is capable of much more centraly , anywhere in front of the DM on the axis and he does well . On the wing ... sure he scored a few goals here and there as a winger , but iirc , almost none of those came because of wing play really. In any case , Jack too is not a winger . Jack is versatile and impressive at that , but he's meant to play centrally if anything .

So 3 players that are no wingers and have been mostly mediocre at it . Let's move on to the others.

Menez is obsessed with the goal , his passing is almost laughable , his work rate and his penchant to refuse obvious passes to teammates to try the extravagant , idk . I would be extremely reluctant to let him carry creative and supportive burden , 'behind' the strikers that is .. although he can play as a winger in the end , but it's a risk. With that said , it would be more of attacking wing-play than true wing-play , like make the entire wing his own. It will be exactly like having 3 strikers on the pitch , so Menez on the right wing , in 4-4-2 , it's a nope if you ask me. Most of the time it would basically be a very unbalanced 4-3-3 .

In the end , it's just Cerci and Ses that can actually play on the wings and be legit options . And even then , i don't like the idea at all. Who's going to bring the depth ?? All the afforementioned were playing out of position really , regardless if they were playing on the wing , there's nothing more to it . They aren't wingers . Also for Cerci and Ses , yes they can actually play both 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 ... but if we are going to actually have success with wing play , their performances will have to improve significantly . Ses can't even guarantee he would play half the season as things stand.

Something last , 4-4-2 , we would need someone a lot more creative than De Jong next to Kondogbia -that's if he even comes to begin with- . De Jong-Kondogbia feels like something one would play in an away game , defending a lead or something. We would resort to long balls and shitty play most of the time , and Kondogbia would have to run riot at opponents to get the ball to his forwards. De Jong can't help creatively when he's the one who actually has to do it. De Jong only tries stuff when we are ahead anyway , he's not a player you can depend uppon to create anything. In any case , De Jong is meant for a 3 man midfield , usually with 2 players in front of him that can create and support the attack. There's a reason he preffers to stay back and protect the backline and that's not only because he's good at it , it's also because he's incredibly shitty the further he finds himself on the field with the ball at his feet.

TL;DR No 4-4-2 , we don't really have the wingers for it .

Empoli had option to buy and they will buy him. Then i guess they can sell him if a good offer comes.

I also doubt Saponara wants to return anyway , we never trusted him . He won't be in Milan next season and it's entirely possible that Empoli may sell him as well if a good offer arrives. But imo all that is just paper talk , he will play for Empoli next season .

Iirc , he wanted to play regularly and badly so . Not sure if he would pass up on Roma , Napoli or Juventus if an opportunite arose , but his main concern seemed to be regular play and Empoli already gave him that .
