Assist of the Season: El Shaarawy to Menez in the derby. Not necessarily an amazing pass, (although it was very good) but just the buildup to that goal was one of the rare moments in the season we played good football, so I want to savor it.

49 unique combinations That the most common combination of four at the back was only used six times all season is absurd.

Examining this list really emphasises that we can't take much from the performances of the individuals in the backline this season. Ignoring even the lack of cover often provided by our constantly shifting team structure, injuries and the whims of Inzaghi never allowed the partnerships in defence to gel. Regardless we need new blood in the centre but we still have some capable individuals at the back who can be useful going forward. We can't continue to manage them in such a fashion however.

Agreed, though given Alex is on 2.5 million a year and injury prone as you say, my preference is for him to leave. If we must convince a third central defender to stay, I would opt for Rami who has the lowest wage packet of all our options and can also cover RB if necessary.
