Jérémy Mathieu: The ginger Abidal
Agreement for the incorporation of Jérémy Mathieu
Jérémy Mathieu will sign a contract with FC Barcelona for the next four seasons, plus an optional season more
FC Barcelona and València CF have reached agreement for the transfer of the French player, Jérémy Mathieu. Jérémy Mathieu will sign a contract with FC Barcelona for the next four seasons, plus an optional season more. The cost of the transfer is 20 million Euros and the buyout clause will be 50 million Euros.
Versatility on the left of defence
Mathieu (Luxeuil-les-Bains, France, 29 October 1983) is a physically imposing defender who can play in various positions at the back. He’s 1.92 m tall, has excellent positional sense and is skilful with the ball at his feet. And he is also impressively strong in the air. Until recently, he was considered a natural left-back, but of late he has tended to feature more regularly in the centre of defence.

Re: Jérémy Mathieu: The ginger Abidal
Has speed and strength, can defend in the 1 v 1 very well and above all gives us someone who can win some aerial balls in set pieces.
Think he will do well.

Re: Jérémy Mathieu: The ginger Abidal
I just hope he doesn't rapidly decline like FIFA has players do after 30
I also think he'll do well, we've called his name in past windows (when it was probably more appropriate to sign hin). Now we have him with us and I can be happy about that.

One of the great stories in modern football history is over
The story of Barca refusing to buy CBs for 5 years is over.
Good night sweet prince.

Mathieu will be will be a player who rotates and covers CB and LB imo. They'll still sign someone like Marquinhos.

Last year his buy-out clause was 10 millions. Could have come for half of the price. Does the club have any real plan or are they improvising ? Nothing against the player tho.

Re: Jérémy Mathieu: The ginger Abidal
Last year you could argue he was still considered a left back and these idiots think Alba is the best thing since sliced bread.
This summer, he is seen as viable as a CB more so after the season he just played.
Your still right though of course.

I had the distinct recollection of being worried whenever Mathieu surged up the left wing in matches vs Barcelona.
Turns out he was quite productive offensively in these matches:

Dat double left back partnership between Alba and Mathieu back in Emery's stint at Valencia though
Re: Jérémy Mathieu: The ginger Abidal
Those Pep vs. Emery battles were legendary. Pep fell for those Mathieu-Alba left flank tactics every single time. When we played 3-4-3 with Mascherano covering that side on his own in 11/12 it was particularly hilarious.

He is insanely quick for a guy as tall as Pique.

Re: Jérémy Mathieu: The ginger Abidal
for someone who is 1.92m tall it's scary how fast he is.
he shits on Pique despite being 5 years older and same height.

Re: Jérémy Mathieu: The ginger Abidal
I like the player and always been impressed....but ffs, 20M for a 30yo LB... oh well, at least he is flexible and defensively solid. I guess b4 Alba was above him and better, rightly so, now we got the other Valencia LB too, but just so expensive....
So last season Neymar, this season Suarez and Mathieu, the board is really splashing out the cash to compete with Real which is good to see, I just hope it doesnt backfire...

Think he will do well.
That is if he gets into the first team. We'll probably start with Pique and Mascherano as our CB pairing and then he may have to compete with Bartra to be first reserve.

Good point. The incompetence of our current handling of transfers and for that matter our entire management cannot be explained in words. It's like when the three idiots were running Juventus and fans couldn't wait to see the back of them.

I get the impression he will get many chances JD. Dont think Mascherano will start either. I want to believe Luis Enrique is smart enough to see that.
I also believe performances will matter, unlike Martino who just plays whoever has the biggest profile.

Re: Jérémy Mathieu: The ginger Abidal
Flawless performance. Speed, strength, passing, good at 1 vs. 1. Really refreshing to see someone at the back who doesn't turn like a truck and runs like he has concrete in his shoes. Ginger Abidal. Like the pairing with Mascherano very much, both no-nonsense 1 vs. 1 and got the recovery speed for a high line.

rather than seeking an ideal partner for Pique, lucho did the best thing. got a partner for Mashcherano all the mash haters here

Its just Granada, please keep that in mind
Mathieu was fantastic, a real performance from him. But him and Mascherano against the very best in the world? Lets wait and see, Mascherano has already shown his limits at that level.

The coaches have told Mathieu that he will have to leave if he doesn't improve. They want him to be more focused during the games. [sport]
