Re: Asian teams
the more important question is why people are always picking on african teams when asian teams ( and yes, even concacaf teams ) have been worse in the past 24 years?

Pele's infamous prediction maybe? More expectations due to the superstars that come from that region?
Good question though.
People have been hyping Japan for years but they've been shit so far and even worse at the Confed Cup.

Re: Asian teams
Because they don't have very good players lol.
Not exactly rocket science, i know everyone loves Japan because they are quite entertaining due to having a poor defense and quite technical going forward.
But fact of the matter is they are bang average, their best player is Honda or Kagawa.
One is a bench warmer at club level and the other has struggled to impress for a mid table Serie A team.

Re: Asian teams
The same reason why there are poor European, South American, African etc etc teams. The players aren't good enough.

Re: Asian teams
African teams tend to underachieve. Concacaf teams aren't bad in general. Only Honduras hasn't won in this WC.
Asian teams though, I guess haven't had too many tournaments in their continent and Footy in general wasn't as popular prior to 2002 as they are now. Asian teams are growing though. African teams have grown as well. Ghana almost made it to Semi's in S. Africa. CONCACAF teams just get beaten by the big Footy nations. US made it to the Quarter Finals in 2002 but were narrowly beaten by Germany. Looking at you ref. Xp

Re: Asian teams
Concacaf's best team ( mexico ) is notorious for underachieving .
that whole region reached the quarter finals just once in 28 years ... and that game pitted two concacaf teams against each other...
meanwhile africa had 3 quarfer final appearances by 3 different teams during that period , and managed to beat two defending world champions ( senegal vs france, cameroun vs argentina )
not to mention 5 different teams past the first round since 1986.

Re: Asian teams
How have Mex underachieve?
Loosing to Germany, Golden Era Bulgaria, US, Argentina.
Don't know about Mex but only US have underachieved against Ghana in 2010 and in 2006 where they didn't qualify from the group stage.

Re: Asian teams
The J-League was just founded in 1992, and they don't have many players playing abroad. Like the US they just need more time. Only just recently is football starting to overtake baseball as their most popular sport. Similar stories with a lot of other asian countries.

This.
Still baseball is the most popular in Japan and it is difficult to replace sooner. but football is growing as well. Also if you consider them playing WC only since 98, performance is not that bad with qualifying for R16 twice ...

Re: Asian teams
I think Japan & Korea have stagnated. They have the financial resources and an organized, professional league; but they have been playing same level of opponents both at club and national level. They need have regular, COMPETITIVE games with teams with much higher level.
Arab countries are unprofessional spoiled-brats and nothing should be expected from them. The mere qualification is an achievement for Iran. given the political, social and economic turmoil they are in.

Re: Asian teams
They always been sub par to the the power nations, so didnt expect much as well from Asia. I think Australia was years back considered Asia as well until they made the Oceania zone?
Japan really disappointing yesterday, they have the experience and the good players, just really flopped badly.
The 2002 and periods during the past decade or so Japan and S. Korea have been good, sad to see them dropping their levels again it seems.

BTW is that individual in your avatar and signature Domench? If yes then why do you choose to highlight him now?

No Australia is Asia's best representative. Just imagine what could have happened if they were in Japan's, Korea's or even Iran's group!
