Argentina's public opinion about Messi finished shifting
A discussion mostly for the Argies in the forum (as myself)
Don't you think Public opion of Messi has been gradually improving in argentina to the point he is not a polarizing player anymore? I used to see a lot of mindless hate for him, but now more and more people are starting to realize how fantastic he is and how much he gives to the team. there are now very few people that, incapable to accept they were wrong all along, continue to critize him. Specially since he has been so constantly good for us.
Anyway, It's great to see the change since I was tired of having to argue to defend him.

The main issue with him is that when he gets the ball too deep he becomes a lot less relevant. He is good at passing but his verticality sometimes gets the best of him when he is too far from goal.
But i haven't for a minute thought that Argentina's criticisism of Messi was due to performances. He has always been, even at his worst, better than a 6/7. The problem was that at a time it became cool to be anti Messi, because he never played in our league and most people don't watch foreign leagues, so they saw him as a fabrication being hyped by the press in to playing for the NT.

It hasn't shifted. We idolize winners and bring them down when they lose again. If Argentina loses, it'll be Messi's fault again

I don't think It'll be like that for most people. People can be stupid but not to such extent.

One good game? Do you watch Argentina's NT or was this comment just for trolling?

That's fair criticism to some people's views. My point is that the group that holds those views has been shriking considerably.

Doesn't matter if he can perform now. It's how he'll do at the latter stages where it matters and gets you trophies. So far he has failed with Argentina.

Messi should take some tips from Robben about stepping up in the big matches.

While I agree with this, I don't think we'll really know how many haters are just posing until Argentina loses again.

He did quite well at last stages of the last Copa America. He actually generally performs quite well.

I really hate watching Messi play in that deep role for Argentina. He just plays miserably there :[

For me there's really not that much haters as there are trends. There's a fairly large group of football fans that knows little about the sport but think it's cool to go to stadiums to get drunk and shout at player as there is another group of people with a mild interest in the game itself but sometimes becomes opinionated about it. Those two groups for me are very sensitive to trends and will say whatever they percieve is cool to say at the time.
It's the same thing with Tevez being "the people's player" and being immune to criticism for a long period until recently. People who don't follow the sport very closely like to repeat some slogans. "Messi being shit for National team" is one of those trendy slogans.

Is the discussion about Messi performance level or the collective accomplishments of the national team?
Because if it's the latter we would be moving from the topic "Argentina's opinion on Messi" to "Argentina's opinion on it's national team"

That would be the team/coach to blame, not just Messi.english_jewel wrote:Nirgal wrote:english_jewel wrote:Nirgal wrote:english_jewel wrote:just because of one good game?

For the amount of God-like praise Messi gets even after scoring a single goal, it shouldn't be a surprise that people will attack him just the same when he doesn't perform. It's getting the balance.

You are speaking about international press, I'm speaking about the argentina's public opinion and press. It's a different enviroment and Messi doesn't get that huge amount of praise here. What's big here in the local league, the rest is less important and Messi is not as frequently mentioned as it's in europe. Besides, for the praise he sometimes gets ,there's also a lot cheap non-football related criticism.
