everything is a trickle down from the language point.

more people can understand it so more people are inclined to watch it which brings in more money which can be invested into further marketing to english speaking people in other parts of the globe which equals more money. more money makes it more interesting to watch for even non-english speaking people.. then this all combines for more popularity.

Spanish is the 2nd most spoken language in the World. Shouldn't that make La Liga #1 then?

I'm not even convinced it is the most popular league in the world. How would you define this? It's the most popular league here, but this is an english-speaking forum. Getting solid numbers on tv viewership across the globe is probably close to impossible. And I can't think of another metric to assess popularity.

Epl is very marketable it on all my sports channel, its the most discussed league on a lot of analyst shows and the league is just hyped overall no matter what

schedules obviously. try to watch la liga or seria A here in china. I would much rather watch those, but I'm not waking up at 3 am to do so.

In Germany the BPL definitely is not the most popular league. If you are lucky you get a 30 min summary of it per week in the FreeTV, and the PayTV market is comparatively tiny (4.5 mio subscribers for Sky, IIRC the last numbers, with the 4.5 mio people not even all subscibers of the sports package).

Premier league dominates the world because it is the most viewed in Asia. It's also the only one that can be viewed in asia (at least in china) at a normal times. Chinese people would also love to watch the league of messi and ronaldo, but can a working or studying person watch football in the middle of the night? very rarely...

1. Here in Bangladesh, EPL matches are between 6:30pm and 10:30pm. Very few late fixtures @ 11:30pm. LL matches are between 12:30am and 2:00am. As a student (13 years ago) I used to watch LL but with job and family that schedule is simply insane.

2. Telecast quality of EPL (ESPN or Star) is better than Italian or Dutch League (Ten Sports). It will seem the camera is on top of Petronas. You can't read the score, so small.

I tried to watch some German or French League on DWTV and TV5, but couldn't for a combination of timing and language.

In my opinion its the hype.

Basically Sky employees have to call it the best league in the world and sensationalize everything around the EPL to make it look bigger, better & faster than everything else around the world.

To be fair BT Sport seem to have taken a more neutral approach in their first fortnight on air. Probably because they show a number of leagues around Europe.

I remember Neil Warnock saying to Neil Lennon he was watching Celtic the the CL last season but the English sides were "boring the skull of him".

And Mark Langdon said in the Bundesliga preview show that "Lewandowski is a much better player than Wayne Rooney".

There is no way those 2 would last on Sky Sports with those statements. The more you say the same thing, the more people will enviably believe it. cheers

My Asian brothers have hit the hammer on the head. A major reason for the popularity of the BPL comes from the Asian friendly Tv schedule. It is common knowledge that Asia represents the fastest growing consumer base in the world(ManUtd have more fans in India than England) and the marketing team has done well to tap this source. BPL matches are played at prime time slots in south east Asia, making it ideal fare for weekends.

It's in stark contrast to La Liga schedules, where I consider myself lucky if Madrid kick off at 1.30 am Rolling Eyes

It also doesn't help that la Liga have dimwits planning their schedule (whose bright idea was it to include Friday and Monday as a regular fixture in a match day weekend??). There are cases where games are started at 11.30 pm local time, a time Falcao said he would normally be asleep at eco smile

And while the BPL gets broadcast on ESPN, the la Liga is shown on the secondary channels (TenAction). There was also a time when La Liga was not shown at all on Tv - 2009-10 season, Cristiano Ronaldo's debut season eco smile

Serie A still suffers some what from the boring football stereotype - where games are like chess, only slower eco smile

It also doesn't help that there is a lack of genuine superstars in Italy.
The German league is also considered to be well of the pace from the top 2 leagues( though last seasons UCL will have changed that opinion eco smile

I think Serie A is starting to catch up with foreign stars like Higuain Tevez Llorente and Gomez all joining the league. The teams still need to own their own stadiums and that process is underway as well. Roma are making big strides in the US which will increase their fan base and TV income from matches. With new stadium teams will get more money from tickets and will likely increase match day attendance. All in all Serie A is on the positive way up.

For this part of the world (Caribbean), US and English products have a better fanbase than other countries and football is no different. Since most of the islands were once singing God Save the Queen at one point in time, you would find that they are more fans of the EPL clubs than you would find of other leagues.

On a worldly basis, without the use of proper statistics, it's kinda hard to pin point why it is so popular but a general assumption would be the scheduling and the marketing of the league. The marketing is made easier when you have Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City and to an extension Tottenham as teams to showcase.

Of course, the actuality of the success (or lack of) of those teams are there to be seen but that is quite irrelevant. The whole tagline of "Best league in the world" can sometimes be overbearing and the wonderfully bias commentators can be frustrating to listen to but I like the league itself. Way before they this whole "Best league" nonsense came about.

In the last 4 Uefa Team of the seasons the EPL has had 4 players in it out of 44. Yes that's correct 4 out of 44. Spain has had 33 players out of the 44 selected just to show the contrast.

Sure those lists can be argued over who should be on them but even if you give the EPL another 10 spots La Liga still has so much more top end talent it's not even debatable.

The EPL having the best talent is comical at best. The EPL actually has a serious shortage of top end talent.

This thread is asking why the EPL is considered the best league, well it's not because of talent because these teams are voted for by the fans and it's pretty obvious where the fans think the best players in the world play there club football.

As for the best players not being stockpiled at 1 or 2 clubs again that is not correct. Outside of Chelsea, City and United who are all of these top players and what clubs do they play for?

I count Bale (who will go to LA Liga) and Suarez.

Just to make it clear I don't think the EPL is the best league but I do understand that is the opinion by the majority of football fans by a very large margin. I am not arguing that. There is just no way that "Talent" is the reason they are considered the best league.
