Come on man, your rivalry with England is much bigger than Germany. You even had a war with them.

England-Germany is only a rivalry for the English. We prefer the Netherlands (aka "Holland") as rivals, even though it isn't as vitriolic nowadays than it was some decades before. Razz

It was just a few months ago that I received an e-mail from a fellow journalist in London that included, more as an aside, this passage: "Don't know if you watch BBC programmes over there, but a recent episode of the Steven Fry vehicle QI was dedicated to Germany. He caused outrage among the panellists by insisting Germans didn't give a rap about Wembley 1966 or any rivalry with England. Very amusing."

Which has led me to presume that we must outline the state of affairs in the most recent past for the benefit of some people again, before we can discuss the potential Van Gaal/Robben effect. Of course I could simply tell people about how I spent September 1, 2001. That, you may recall, was the day Germany played a certain World Cup qualifier against England at home, in Munich.

I spent that day as a reporter for an English monthly, trying to find German fans who would tell me that this game meant really so much to them because there was this huge rivalry with England. I didn't meet any. The English writer David Buckley, who was there with me, didn't either.

Then I watched the game together with hundreds of other Germans in the Muffat Hall in central Munich. Germany were beaten 5-1, so I conducted my post-match interviews with the tact of a mortician - when suddenly an almighty cheer went up and people started singing.

As I turned around, I saw highlights of the Republic of Ireland versus the Netherlands game on the giant screen. The Irish had won and people were singing "We're going to the World Cup without Holland."

(...)

You can read about the rest of the story on Wikipedia. (Yes, the Dutch-German football rivalry has its own Wikipedia entry. Tellingly, the entry for the English-German rivalry doesn't have a German-language version.)

Holland and The Netherlands aren't the same thing. Holland is just a part of The Netherlands (the best part). That makes those crappy pictures extra crappy.

But yes, The Netherlands vs Germany is the biggest international rivalry in my book. What happened in the past (yes, I am referring to war but also to 1974) hasn't exactly been forgotten by the Dutch and it has always fueled the rivalry. Nowadays it is not really at the forefront but it always lingers. Why the Germans have the same animosity (or similar feelings) about this isn't completely clear to me. Perhaps they have just grown into it due to the hostility of the Dutch. Perhaps a German could shed some light on that.

At any rate, we can be proud of what we achieved in football. And at what we achieved against ze Germans. Only a couple wins in favour of the Germans overall even though their population is over 5 times higher (which obviously gives them a huge advantage). Also, we've got just as much ballon d'or wins as the Germans but our legends (Cruijff and Van Basten, 3 each) have won more golden balls than the German legends. Considering all of this: The Netherlands >>>> Germany. :coffee:

Pff. The above only proved that Frank Rijkaard had no manners whatsoever :coffee:

I guess the hostility was more like a "Retourkutsche" due to the Dutch hostility. As you shout into the forest, the forest shouts back at you, we say.

And by the way, we used "Holland" as it was easier to sing "Ohne Holland fahrn wir zur WM" than to find some some melody that worked with "Ohne die Niederlande fahrn wir zur WM" Razz

"Dutch" is an English bastardization of "Deutsch" showing you exactly how well the English are at learning languages. Just like how the "Pennsylvania Dutch" speak German, not Dutch.

Also, stop whining about Germans calling your country Holland colloqually instead of Niederlande, the French call us Allemagne, when the Allemans were just one tribe of Germanic peoples, FFS. The only root words that properly describe all of Germany are those stemming from the Latin "Germania" or "Teutonia".

It's not like I throw a hissy fit when people don't call Köln Köln, or München München. In fact I've probably heard Munich more often than München.

That's because they always play the games on the West Coast, which has many Mexican immigrants and traveling fans. If you had the game at say The Meadowlands you would have a majority American supporters.

Doesn't have to do jack shit with 'politically correct' bullshit, BC. It's like calling Spain Catalonia or Argentina Córdoba. It's just not correct, no 'politics' necessarily involved.

Oh and Viva, you just don't get it. There is a correct word for the country in both languages (The Netherlands/Niederlande) so there is absolutely no reason not to use the correct word.

Hahaha. Nah man, I pity you.

The whole easier for the song thing is kind of weak but I already ended that little not-so-serious discussion with RWO when you had to come along and rant about how I should stop whining. The irony. With your all-caps 'ffs' and ranting. Haha, pathetic. I hope you aren't like this in real life.

Classico is glorified and they play 5 derbies in a row and the rest of the league sucks,in EPL there are so many derbies that there's one every weekend and everyone hates each other.

Way, did not know Holland was the incorrect name for The Netherlands which makes sense now considering no one has ever said The Holland Antilles.

Anyway, Leeds - Galatasary was pretty intense if I recall...
