Diego López better than Iker Casillas? Atleast Sir.Alex thinks so

There was all this issue with Real about [Iker] Casillas. But Casillas wouldn’t have saved the shots that the boy [Diego] López saved. Going out to Danny Welbeck, going down at Robin van Persie, coming out and whacking [Nemanja] Vidic in the head. Casillas isn’t that type of goalkeeper and that saved them, having that type of goalkeeper

Diego López was the difference.I think López saved them.

As I read what Sir.Alex said, I nodded in agreement. It is there to see - Lopez has more hunger and better technique in making crucial reflex saves.

The old man is senile. I like Lopez, he's great, a madridista, but no way better than the Saint.

Casillas is overall better than Lopez, however Lopez is good too. It would be unfair if Lopez was randomly dropped.

We are talking about current season, not history. What makes you guys think that Iker is better than Lopez? Any statistics would be welcome for this season.

As for current season - I think Lopez did a better job. We can clearly see his technique in handling set pieces is better than Ikers and so are his reflexes.

thats probably why he is a back up to iker at best, after they scored he did everything wrong and celta were unlucky not to get something out of the game but its refreshing to have a goalie who will just go about his business and not spend most of his time screaming at the defence

Iker has been average at best this season minus a few great performances. (vs Barca in the Super Cup first leg and City away) Besides that though he's been very shaky and his set piece defending has been poor. It's not a coincidence that we stopped conceding so many set pieces since Lopez took over. (Anyone remember when Iker gave Pepe a concussion? lol)

I don't think Diego is better than Iker, but I do think Diego is more focused and a better fit to the way we currently defend and as far as this season goes he's been a source of confidence for our defence. Iker this season has not been that. He hasn't been bad but he hasn't been great either.

I have n't watched Celta game. I am not going to judge someone by one odd game, but by a season.

Iker & Diego have their own strengths and weaknesses. Iker perhaps is better in one-on-one situations, but Diego is way better than Iker at set pieces. Given our playing style (counter-attacking) we will not have many 1-1 cases compared to Set pieces. thus making Set pieces the most important things to defend, which Diego does far better than Iker. Hence the conclusions that

1) Iker is not that type of a goalie
2) Diego is better than Iker (for set pieces, Hence for RM).

Our primary style of play is possession against most sides.

Against weaker sides - Yes.

Against bigger teams - We don't play possession football,unless we are forced to like in old trafford.

Any team who wants to play possession vs us, we let them play it, whether that's a smaller team or a bigger side imo. We've played possession vs Dortmund and Man City too.

It didn't look like we were forced to play possession vs Man Utd, because we were pressing and retaining the ball. If we didn't want to play possession, we could have just hoofed it and let Man Utd have the ball or something.

Casillas wouldn't have played better than Lopez did. Glad to see SAF agrees.

Casillas would be second choice for the rest of the season unless Lopez gets injured. Lopez brings a lot of confidence into the back four and bar one or two errors he's been very impressive. Casillas would have to wait for his turn, hope this spurs him on to be a better goalkeeper, he was getting complacent.
