Re: 2022 Qatar World Cup
Damn man just caught up with this. Not saying we aint strangers to this but they really went over the top with the the whole marrying the aggressor to wipe her "crime". Fucking insane...BarrileteCosmico wrote:Mexican woman on World Cup committee in Qatar sentenced to 7 years in prison and 100 lashes after being sexually abused
https://www.proceso.com.mx/nacional/2022/2/17/mexicana-sufre-abuso-sexual-en-qatar-la-condenan-100-latigazos-281101.html
And just like that this reminder put cold water over any WC fever.
Holding this in Qatar is such a fucking travesty

Canada is officially qualified
I will watch the world cup and have somebody to root for. My mind is struggling to process the information.

Re: 2022 Qatar World Cup
The qualifiers in Africa are cruel, especially the second stage with 10 groups and only the 1st place advances over 6 games makes it very hard for smaller teams.
Concacaf is also cruel you have USA/Mexico clearly above everyone else + a bunch of gritty central american teams all that for 3.5 spots
Never really followed the national team because i never had a reason believe in them. Maybe as a teenager when i was avid consumer of football i did watch some games and we always sucked terribly, struggling against Belize etc.
As i grew up most of us played hockey in winter and the most popular summer sport was baseball. Soccer was also popular but just as amateur sport it was nothing serious. There was no relevant league to follow, barely a media coverage except Champions League at 3PM on week days or the Barclays PL at 6AM on week ends.
BUT there is a change of culture in the process, soccer is on a fast rise in the country, most subscribed sport by the youth... our women are olympic champions, we have a pro division 1 with academies that develop talent, canadian players now perform in top europeans leagues. We co-host the world cup. There was none of that before. Shit's getting serious and i think we can be on par with USA/Mexico within 5-10 years.

Re: 2022 Qatar World Cup
BTW, is it just me or there are truly no groups of death this time?
Group A: Qatar (hosts), Netherlands, Senegal, Ecuador
You can predict for almost every group which teams are going to the knockout rounds.

Yeah group H is maybe not group of death but could be full of surprises
group A is interesting
and battle for 2nd place in group G

Re: 2022 Qatar World Cup
Love our group
By all logic we finish 4th but i hope to scrape a draw or even a win. We will face great stars such as Lukaku, De Bruyne and Modric. It's time to show that canadian grit, and get some World Cup experience ahead of 2026.

I hoped we would get Canada but Mexico, Argentina & Saudis is a very nice and exotic group with no other team being european that we face on a daily

Re: 2022 Qatar World Cup
I really hope the US does well here. Best talent ever for this team imo. It could really kick start a few things.
I really dislike how football is run in the US. A big damn shame frankly. Instead of giving money to develop the academy and attract young players (basically any young player around the world; but best chance is in South America)... the money goes to over the hill stars for marketing reasons. Really annoys me.
But anyhow, rooting for the US big time. 2nd team after France.

True, and also very odd because football is really not that popular in the US. People there seem to be more into Basketball, Baseball and American football. Yet when the WC comes, they lose their minds and turn into die-hard fans.
I guess it's because they are excessively patriotic and if they see their NT enter a very popular competition, they will support them in an insufferable way even if they deep down, they don't give a damn about the sport.
