David Moyes has told his Manchester United players they don’t have to be the best team in Europe to win the Champions League.

Moyes' men will attempt to rescue their sorry season when they travel to Olympiakos on Tuesday night.

The Scot refuses to give up on leading the faltering Premier League champions to a top-four finish, but United’s domestic travails have meant their most realistic hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League will be to lift this season’s European crown.

And to accomplish that, Moyes has taken inspiration from the way Liverpool won the Champions League in 2005.

Rafa Benitez’s miracle in Istanbul came at the end of a campaign when Liverpool had finished fifth in the league.

And the United boss said: “It isn’t always the best teams that get to the final in Europe. Liverpool in 2005 gives us hope, but in any cup competition you always have a chance.

“I knew it was going to be a hard competition before it started. Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid and PSG are all top clubs.”

Moyes knows anything can happen in football: “You see some of the games, where teams have hung on and hung on and somehow nicked a goal.”

The United boss, though, will not be able to pick £37million record signing Juan Mata for the game in Greece as he is cup-tied. But Moyes believes his squad has been revitalised by a five-day training break in Dubai.

“It gave us the chance to be together,” he said. “We didn’t need loads of training, but it was probably the first time I’ve had a real chance to get together with the players.

“We trained every day, had some good weather and played golf. It gave me the chance to spend some time with the players.”

He has to remain confident, even though in reality, our chances of winning the CL are not great.
