Crimson wrote:Goalkeeper: Casillas - No keeper has won as much or been as clinical when it really counts. Has never conceded a goal in any final he has been a part of. Leading Caps for Spain and most clean sheets in international history.
CB: Beckenbauer - Won every trophy he competed for, considered by many to be the best defender to ever play the game, four time German footballer of the year and two time ballon d'Or winner.
CB: Moore - Another World Cup winning captain and imo the best defender to ever come out of England. Pele considered him to be the best defender he played against and that's more than good enough for me.
CB: Baresi - The great AC Milan legend, and yet another World Cup winner and the greatest Italian defender of all time, considering the list that's a pretty mean feat. 3 time Euro Cup winner as well as 6 time Serie A winner when the league was considered to be the best in the world.
DM: Matthhaus - Yes another World Cup winner, ballon d'Or winner and record cap holder for Germany. The man that could do it all proving a key player when ever his team took to the pitch.
CM: Xavi - The late bloomer has proved to be one of the best passers of the ball of all time, winning everything and being a key player in what many consider one of the best club and international teams in history. Oh and yeah another World Cup winner
ACM/CM: Cruyff - 3 time European footballer of the year and 3 time Euro Cup winner, Cruyff is still considered by many to be one of the best attacking midfielders to have ever graced the game, mentioned in the same breath as Maradona and Di Stefano. As he is the only European in that list he easily gets the nod.
ACM: Platini - One of the best passers of the ball to ever grace the game (like Xavi), was also one of the best dead ball specialists to have ever played, also a 3 time European player of the year award winner and most famous for utterly destroying everything in France's 1984 Euro win.
ACM: Zidane - Yet another world cup winner multiple player of the year winner Euro winner and all around freak of nature. On his day he could do it all and one of the best players to watch with the ball at his feet the world will ever see.
CF: Puskas - Probably the greatest European striker of all time, he may not have the numbers as some of the others but he hit them in when they counted most, a key figure in multiple Euro Cup wins for Real Madrid and one of the best international teams of all time he gets the nod up front for me.
CF: Eusebio - For me the greatest Portuguese player to ever play the game, the black panther scored 733 goals in just 745 competitive games in his career at a time when European football was very competitive.
Coach: Mourinho - A choice not many will like but his track record at multiple clubs speaks for itself.
This. Can't agree more.

Excellent choices man.A little short on width but with Cruyff and Eusebio there shouldnt be a problem.Would have loved to have had Muller in there too but Puskas and Eusebio were better players.
The only thing I dont like is Mourinho as coach.A team with such attacking talent deserves an attacking coach.

Thanks alex I was torn between Rinus Michels and Mourinho, I agree the team would of worked better with Rinus but for me Mourinho is better overall.

I guess the question is about the best european team. Coach was specifically mentioned though in terms of success Mourniho is more successful than Rinus...

No real problems with your team, though I don`t think you`ll get the best of Platini in that position, I`d put him in Baggio`s position for maximum effect & maybe put George Best in Platini`s position since he is one of the best wingers & dribblers ever.

Gentile was just an animal, technically he wasn`t the best defender, he`d be sent off today almost every game, guys like Baresi & Maldini were far better IMO, those were defenders that would have been the best in any era.

Re: European All Time Starting XI
Don Carlo i had my suspicions before, with you telling me Van Basten was better than Baggio, but now saying Scirea wasnt a top defender just proves to me that you just hte Juve and arr obviously a Milan fan. Maldini and Baresi better than Scirea is arguable. FAR better is just a ridiculous thing to say.

I`m baffled here...
1. I never said Scirea wasn`t a top defender, I said I thought Gentile wasn`t good enough to make an all time Euro team & guys like Maldini & Baresi were better.
2. I don`t hate Juventus (nor any Italian team for that matter), they had some of my favourite players, Zidane, Baggio, Del Piero, Thuram & Platini.... I am a Celtic supporter & live in Glasgow, Scotland.
3. No matter which way you cut it, Van Basten was better than Baggio.

1. Ah, misread it. My fault.
2..Again, my fault, but the way you support Van Basten over Baggio really makes you seems like a Milan supporter.
3. I disagree. They were different, but Baggio was the better player of the two without any doubt in my mind.

1. No probs, it happens.
2. I think the majority on non-Juventus supporting football fans would see Van Basten as a better player than Baggio to be honest.
3. See number 2.

Exactly my thoughts, haha.
It baffles the shit out of me how anyone can put Pepe in at centre back ahead of guys like Baresi, Nesta, Sammer, Kohler, Cannovaro, Moore etc... its crazy.

Yashin / schmeichel (from what I've seen)
Maldini
Baresi
Beckenbauer
Makelele
Scholes
Xavi
Zidane
Cruyff
C. Ronaldo
Van Basten
Would love to have full backs but the european full backs didn't really excite me that much.

First time i hear about Johnstone . I suppose i could just check the internet right now , but i would really appreciate it if you explained the reason you put him there.
I always found myself interested in past players and i have a bunch of dvds about past W.Cups , Euros and of a few of the old European Cup. Don't know/recall about Johnstone though.
Mine looks like this :
"Rest of the best" : Pirlo , Xavi , Zidane , Raul , Figo , Stam , Blanc , Cocu , Sammer , Koeman , Rummeninge , Seedorf , Schnellinger , Buffon , Yashin , Kahn , Shevchenko , Matthaus , Baggio , Scirea , Muller
pheew that's not a team , that's a terrorist organisation

Jimmy Johnstone, known as `Jinky` was unquestionably the best winger Scotland ever produced (& IMO Scotland`s best ever player, period)... he was one of the best ever dribblers as you might expect from being a winger, he was voted Celtic`s best ever player by the fans ahead of other legends of the club such as Larsson & Dalglish. I have posted a tribute video of Jinky on the multi-media section.
He was Celtic`s best player in their best ever team & was probably the player most responsible for Celtic becoming champions of Europe in 1967.
There might have been other players that achieved more in European football for their clubs but there are NONE that I would play wide right ahead of him, cheers.
