Gee, I don't know...maybe the fact that that's the only other place he's managed has something to do with it....
And as I said, yes, he excelled in the Europa League, but what does that mean if everything he's done since has been an abysmal failure?

Doesn't matter though, does it? We have a better TROPHY record in the last 2 seasons(including beating you in one Final).RedOranje wrote:What's Chelsea's record against Liverpool in the last 2 seasons, again?fatman123 wrote:Barrettinator wrote:Well the Europa League is not the most difficult competition out there, is it Dani? The Franchise wrote:Why do you keep saying Portugal, like thats the only place he was good tacticially?

AVB is a good manager, but all I can see is Spurs leaking goals like rain under his tactics. The midfield is good enough for that sort of style, but no way are the defense or attack suited for it.
Nevermind if Modric goes. They'd have it better playing hoofball than a slick passing style considering the current quality of PL CMs.

When talking about tactical difficulty I'd say a head to head record is pretty relevant, since you were the one to specifically mention Liverpool.

Re: Andre Villas Boas To Spuds: Done Deal
Well I see where you are coming from with the total failure of AVB's methods and tactics with Chelsea, and how RDM got you silverware out of a season where most people had written you off. But forgive my ignorance, how supportive was the team of AVB from day one?
I believe that heirarchy exists for a reason. And senior players can not and should not be revolting against a manager. There are better ways of sorting out differences. France had their fair share of troubles in WC2010 with the whole players vs. coach scenario.
Don't get me wrong, I am not absolving AVB of any crimes here. He was pathetic with the way he managed his team in England. As were his stubborness to the very same tactics, no matter who the opponent.
I think he is an intelligent chap and would have learned his lessons though. When we talk about giving players time to settle in the PL, shouldn't a relatively young and new manager also be given some time to adjust his methods and approach? If he is half as tactically astute as his time at Porto portrayed him to be, he would have well learned his lessons now.
And that brings me to what happens if he takes over at Spuds. Well, they are pretty shite anyway, and his high line will see them concede a joyous number of goals. But if he is given time, and reasonable say in transfers, then he can make them competitive again (even though I can taste some bile saying that, I would rather beat the best Spuds team in 50 years 5-2 than win 2-0 over a mediocre bunch of twats.)

yeah ok, on a head-to-head basis you leave us for dead, but if you compare league standings and trophies over the last 2 seasons its much different story, consistancy>one off wins
also red removing from my post before quoting me

It might not be, but I think beating Benfica, Villarreal, Atletico and Braga is harder than Fulham, Everton, Stoke and the like.

Re: Andre Villas Boas To Spuds: Done Deal
AVB's issue at Chelsea was that he was basically instructed to bring in a new phase of players. He tried to do his job, but the core of the squad, such as Lampard, Drogba etc. Were the players he was trying to phase out.
People forgot how well he did at Porto...
And I honestly think that given the right circumstances (Modric, Bale, Parker, VdV, etc. staying) and the right budget (Levy will provide) and enough creative freedom (no problem from the men above him), he can prove that he's still the man that took Porto through an entire season undefeated.

smh
I could throw similar type statements at Mancini in his first season (they had nearly identical records) and now look, Man City are Champs.

Re: Andre Villas Boas To Spuds: Done Deal
He wasn't given the creative freedom he needed at Chelsea.
Di Matteo was... look where it got him.

Re: Andre Villas Boas To Spuds: Done Deal
The team being "behind" him or not makes no difference at all in his team selections, formations, and substitutions, etc. Yes, the squad wasn't playing for him in the end which did have an effect on results, but they didn't need to be for him to get those things right, which he simply didn't.
Lack of support has no effect on his strategic and tactical decision-making, and he got all of that wrong.

I think at Spurs AVB will be given time. At Chelsea they expect to win every major trophy and if a few results go wrong then they start worrying. Spurs however don't have high expectations.

Re: Andre Villas Boas To Spuds: Done Deal
Exactly! I can't even remember any match under him where we came from behind to win the match or where we won after drawing the match for extended periods. I can only remember NUMEROUS occasions where we conceded within the last 15mins after being ahead. Defense was as poor as I've ever seen a Chelsea defense in the last 12 years.ShedEnd1905 wrote:The team being "behind" him or not makes no difference at all in his team selections, formations, and substitutions, etc. Yes, the squad wasn't playing for him in the end which did have an effect on results, but they didn't need to be for him to get those things right, which he simply didn't.

The fact that the players eventually weren't playing for him has nothing to do with his horrendous substitutions and tactics. I mean, the man played *bleep*ing BOSINGWA at LB against Napoli and sat Ashley Cole on the bench.

Re: Andre Villas Boas To Spuds: Done Deal
The only time I remember him doing anything that changed our fortunes in a game was the match against United at Old Trafford. We were completely outplayed in the first half, then at halftime he made a few changes, and we were clearly the better side until the final whistle, as even many United fans conceded. Only problem was, we were still beaten 3-1, and it could have been more with the Rooney penalty miss and maybe an uncalled one or two.
Other than that, he was useless. This tactical mastery we heard (and still hear) so much about was AWOL for the entire 8 months he was with us.

Pathetico were eliminated in the group stages and Benfica lost to Braga so both didn't get to meet Porto
