The manager in me has been thinking:
Or:
Szczesny
Sagna --- Koscielny --- Vermaelen --- Gibbs
Arteta --- Song --- Wilshere
van Persie
Giroud --- Podolski

Re: Olivier Giroud
Now THAT'S depth. Our subs are fantastic. Another new face in midfield and maybe a versatile defender and I think we're as prepared as we'll ever be to challenge on all fronts.

I know. Wenger likes his wide men, even if they aren't natural wingers. Still, one can always hope we at least try something like that every now and again.

Re: Olivier Giroud
Van Persie on the wing ?
Would it make sense for someone who had the highest goal-scoring season in his career to move him back to his old position ? I dont think so.
And also Van Persie is a forward and not an AM.
EDIT:I think the games against Portugal and Denmark might have given you a good indication

Re: Olivier Giroud
It's not really an AM role I'm thinking of. More of SS or deep-lying forward sort of thing, with Podolski and Giroud pulling out wide or deep to open up room for van Persie.
Besides, Arsenal and Netherlands use two different systems. Just because he didn't perform well in a deeper role for his country, doesn't mean he can't play there for his club. For his country, he was playing in front of two defensive midfielders who had no interest in supporting him, and had Sneijder and Robben either side of him and they didn't want to make forwards run; they wanted to come inside and receive the ball. At Arsenal, he'd support from his central midfield and movement ahead of him. So it could work.
And if we really are going to be playing all three of them at the same time, I think a slightly deeper central role would work better for van Persie than shoe-horning on the right hand side.

-Song-Arteta-Wilshire
---VP---------Podolski

Quite frankly, this move is unfair to Walcott who has paid his dues on the wing long enough. Now I don't even know what his role is on this team? Supersub? he's better than that.
All 4 of your best attacking players want to play CF and only one will get to.
Is it possible that he will leave?
You could see something like this as well
------Song-Wilshire-
Gervinhio-----------Podolski
------------Van Perise
------------Giroud---------.

Re: Olivier Giroud
I'm pretty sure Theo will still start, with Podolski on the left wing and Giroud being the super sub, unless we switch to a 4-4-2 and sacrifice a CM. Actually, the two striker thing might even be more possible if Wenger is thinking of using Theo as a striker from now on (as has been the long-term plan), but we'll have to wait for preseason I guess. I highly, highly doubt that we will sacrifice fullbacks or wingers to accommodate Giroud.

Re: Olivier Giroud
Delighted with the signing of Giroud. Very different to Chamakh, as last season in France stats for both players show.
Ligue 1:
Giroud: 21 goals, 9 assists
Chamakh: 10 goals, 1 assist
Giroud technically better, more physical, stronger in the air, and has more intelligence. Biggest difference of course, Giroud isn't scared to have a shot lol. Chamakh has to be the most unselfish striker I've ever seen.
Van Persie, Podolski, Giroud, Joel Campbell, Walcott......I like these options. Must get Theo & RVP signed up.

Re: Olivier Giroud
exactly.. I am sure most of us didnt believe when Wenger and Gazidis said that we will be active this summer.. Seems we learnt the lesson from last summer.. And i think we wont sell RVP even if he doesnt sign a new contract unless it is massive.. So we can start looking forward to next season...MJGunner wrote:Now THAT'S depth. Our subs are fantastic. Umm.. I have said this before and I will say it again - we have made a good start to the summer. But the job is still far from done. We have addressed the situation which would arise in case RvP and/or Theo leave. But we have not addressed the issues which were prevalent earlier -> defense and chance creation.
Arteta and the rejuvenated Rosicky and the experienced Benayoun helped last season. But we haven't effectively filled the void we experienced due to Cesc/Ca$ri departures and Jack injury. Gervinho would have to step up much more to fill the void Arshavin has left (despite all his laziness and stuff, the man had a knack for magic moments - remember Barcelona or Liverpool?). We still need to address this issue. Piling pressure/responsibility on the young Ramsey, the younger Oxlade, the injury-return Jack, the 10-days-away Diaby or the ageing duo of Rosicky-Arteta is not going to solve this.
And then ofcourse is the question of how well our midfield protects our defense and covers for the full backs when they attack. Song isn't doing that job and Coquelin is too young/inexperienced to be the solution, while it would be unfair to put this on the shoulders of Frimpong who is also making his way back from multiple injuries.
=> The midfield has to be worked out. Not just in terms of personnel, but also tactics.

Re: Olivier Giroud
He has signed. Sorry to ask and I will probably cope some abuse but exactly why did you sign him when you probably need more depth in defense? Also, I think you may need someone in midfield especially at AM, with Rosicky getting old and Ramsey with not enough experience... Thoughts?

RVP is our only good Striker atm (not counting Podolski) and we need a backup if RVP leaves or stays...So Podolski and Giroud are his replacement/support
Our defense is good enough, we probably only need a a versatile youngster who can play all throughout the backline, We have Verm, Kos, Per at CB...
We may need a AM but it all depends on RVP future and if Wenger decides to change formations, and a bit on how Wilshere will be when he comes back from injury
