Personally, I just want an apology and an explanation of what the feck he was thinking when he posted that statement on his site.

His captaincy should be put under consideration though, like jay said, Gallas was stripped for something very similar.

Sky Sports have removed the "Van Persie could sign new contract with Arsenal" story from their website. Wow. ‪#afc

The only reason i would see him doing a U-turn is if no one wants to pay for him.

PSG already said no, at City they need to sell before he can join, even then he won't be starter. Spainish teams don't need him. Only Milan or Juv are left and not sure they will spend what we are asking.

I stand by this assessment. :coffee:

Yes. Put aside all the leadership and balls he showed through the year because of one statement, which was probably drafted FOR him and not BY him anyway. (His leadership on the pitch and through the year was BY him and not done FOR him. Case in point.)

I'm grateful for everything he did and commend his professionalism on the pitch, but that was a pitiful statement to make as the club showed more ambition than they have in years and to be frank, we're closely reaching a point where our status as a big club is in tatters, him leaving only confirms that he feels he can lead us nowhere. Why should we let him lead the line if he changes his mind? Vermaelen was always sure he wanted to stay.

A statement pretty much telling the other guys on the team that they won't win anything with the plans the board and Wenger is following

Vermalen hasn't stayed here for 8 years and won a single FA Cup medal.

I am not supporting the decision to keep RvP as captain. But I think its knee jerk to make this the only reason to change the captain, IF HE DOES RENEW. Mind, last summer, I wanted Vermaelen to be captain over RvP when Fibreglass left.

He's stayed here 4 years and says he'll never leave, time will tell how true to that statement he is but he's shown to be a great leader and is pledging his future to the club, his whole career. RVP isn't giving his best years which would presumably follow this year if he remained fit, to the club.

RvP said in 2009 that he will never leave.

My point is that we trust players too easily and then feel let down when they make a single statement.

Kissing the badge on the shirt is not the same in meaning as it used to be. Not every player who kisses it means to show an undying love and loyalty.

If Vermaelen says the same thing when he is approaching his best years of 28 and his contract is due for renewal that time, then I will believe you. Not now.

I said, time will tell. And RVP said he couldn't see himself in another shirt after his contract renewal in '09. That's not the same as Vermaelen blatantly saying 'I want to stay here forever'. For me, the statement he made was too much to see him lead the club as if he was always going to.

I am maybe picking on words again, but doesn't not wanting to be in another shirt mean wanting to retire at the same club?

I strongly believe RVP wants to stay and he wants to make sure he is getting paid like all other players his level. Is not like RVP has been healthy for past 8 years and he did his best and we didnot win anything, he knows if was healthy we would have won the EPL or maybe the CL.

It comes down to money, its his last contract and he wants to be paid well. If Man shity is offer over 200k, we should at least give him what other teams offering him.

RVP can still become a Arsenal legend, we all know he loves Arsenal as much as we do.

Meh, it's a pledge to the club but I feel what Vermaelen said was more direct to show intent. But then again, every player loves his club when he re-signs and gets a bonus.

Even if he makes that u turn and a public apology, he can never get that legendary image back.. And we should not make him captain again..
Cant predict what Vermelen will say after 3 years.. As for now.. He is the best choice...

RvP Contract Talks - Page 15 Empty Re: RvP Contract Talks

Post by AnJl Wed Jul 11, 2012 8:06 am

You know what was one of Vermaelen's statements when he joined the club?

" I want to be the captain of Arsenal"

Tell me which other player has said that, ever?!

Tells how much this means to him, more so than the constant generic spewing of ' I cant see myself in another shirt' or ' Manchester City is destroying football, unlike Arsenal' (paraphrased)

But despite that, I think RVP should stay captain, if he does stay.

Let us forget the contract debacle and that heart wrenching message for him.

Look at what he did for us over the past year, he was honestly a true captain. He was determined, fierce, didnt back down, always looked to keep the team together, didnt do that 'lead by example' piece of crap - when he lead, he lead not only by showing it on the pitch, but off the pitch.

It was a serious mistake to keep Gallas and Fabregas captain.

Gallas: It was probably the most stupidest mistake of Wenger to keep Gallas captain after only joining Arsenal only a year ago. This led to Toure being pushed out of the club when everyone thought that he should have been captian, considering he was there for a long time.

Being overlooked as captain and his relationship with Gallas being near non existent, he left because his motivation was destroyed.

In the end, the decision to make Gallas captain came back to bite us. Forget the Birmingham incident (we made a mountain out of a molehole with that one), but his decision to openly attack not only the club, but directly the players on just about every basis is what led him to be knocked off as captain.

Fabregas was just a desperate attempt to keep him here. simple as that.
At best he was decent. And again, all that 'oh, he led on the pitch' bs didnt impress me. A captain is more than that. Look at all of the captains we have had and tell me which of them did only that crap. They led on and off the pitch with authority, ferocity and grace.

And that is what RVP is, he is exactly the captain we need. He and his wife did much more with their off the field events for the players families and all.

I would only like him to apologise to what he has done, forget everyone else, but mainly to his own teammates. Because they finally had someone to look up to with admiration and pride and they got pretty hurt by what happened, so if the players completely forgive him, then it is safe to say I will completely forgive him.

Grimandi: Giroud signed to replace van Persie
Arsenal scout Gilles Grimandi has admitted striker Olivier Giroud is a direct replacement for want-away captain Robin van Persie.

The 28-year-old van Persie, who scored 30 English Premier League goals last season, last week announced his intention not to extend his deal with the north London club once it expires in mid-2013.

And former Arsenal defender Grimandi has now revealed that the capture of the former Montpellier forward was made with the Dutchman's future in mind.

Speaking to French website le10sport.com, Grimandi said: "Was the recruitment of Giroud made to compensate for his (van Persie's) departure? Yes, we worked to avoid being cornered.

"We want him to stay home but he is left with one year on his contract so it is complicated.

"At Arsenal, there is a healthy atmosphere, he's been here for eight years and he has a real commitment to the club."

Grimandi also said the former Feyenoord striker, who joined the club for 2.75 million pounds in 2004, has his price.

"If there is a great offer and if he wants to leave, it will be difficult to keep him," Grimandi said.

"I would never have thought that players such as Thiago Silva could be transferable and that was the case at a time. There are parameters you cannot handle."
