Newcastle to unveil Sir Bobby Robson statue
Newcastle United have announced that they will reveal a statue of former manager Sir Bobby Robson before the final home game of the season.
A ceremony will take place at 10:30am on Sunday May 6 unveiling the bronze sculpture of Sir Bobby which will stand at nine-and-a-half feet tall outside the Sports Direct Arena.
The statue was commissioned by the club last autumn and pays tribute to the former England manager who died in 2009 after a battle with lung cancer.
Derek Llambias, managing director at Newcastle United, said: "We're delighted to be able to honour Sir Bobby Robson with this lasting tribute. He was a great man and ambassador for this football club and for the city.
"He achieved great success during his time as manager of Newcastle United and this statue is a fitting way for the club to remember him."
The ceremony will be attended by former players and staff who worked under Sir Bobby and current manager Alan Pardew and his team of backroom staff.
Also present among the guests will be Sir Bobby's widow, Lady Elsie Robson, representatives from the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and the sculptor, Tom Maley.
Lady Elsie Robson added: "It's very fitting that there will be a tribute to Bob outside Newcastle United's ground. This is where his love of football began.
"As a boy he'd come here with his dad and he likely queued to get into the ground where the statue will be sited.
"My husband's career took him all over the world but he was always a Newcastle fan at heart. He loved this club and was very proud to be its manager.
"I think the statue design is wonderful and I'm very grateful to Newcastle United for funding it."
Wonderful news, a great move by the club...... i just wish Sir Bobby was alive to see it

Legendary north east bloke, but this is only being done for PR reasons.
Mags only started liking the bloke again when he got ill.
They forget how they hounded him out of his job, spat at him and banned him from the ground, and just generally treated him like shite.
It would be more fitting to have put it in his home town. Like the Bob Paisley Liverpool memorial through Hetton.

Re: Newcastle to unveil Sir Bobby Robson statue
Try re write history all you want and divert away from the fact the club are whoring his name and status as a PR stunt.
If it was a small percentage of fans who hounded him out, there wouldnt have been polls with 90 odd percent of fans saying yes he should be sacked. There wouldnt have been Mass Booing & Jeering from the croud at Sid James the final game of the season when you drew with wolves and finished 5th.
Hide behind Shepard and use him as a excuse all you want but fickle newcastle fans played just as much of a part in forcing him out.
If he was so loved in newcastle before he got ill he wouldnt have chose to come to the SOL and watch Sunderland play.
I Suggest you read his book, you will find out how newcastle fans really treated him. Both when he was england manager and Newcastle manager.
The bloke truelly was a legand and deserves a fitting tribute to him. But he wasnt really a newcastle legend. they are just using his name for media attention.
It would of been more fitting to have it outside his cancer hospital or in his home town of Sacriston, thats in Durham btw no where near newcastle.

It's a class act, he deserves it. But it's a pity this tradition our society has of only giving proper tribute to someone after they have already died.

Benfica manager laying down flowers at the Sir Bobby statue before the game yesterday.
Speaks volumes for the man considering he managed Porto and Sporting Lisbon.
