Re: Maths- Gym for Brainiacs
..
I was thinking along those lines, but then I rationalised that they were actually two separate triangles .

Re: Maths- Gym for Brainiacs
Here's a question for ya'll
prove that 0.9999999999999999999.... = 1
formally
(use infinite geometric sum if you can)
prove that 0.9999999999999999999.... = 1

Re: Maths- Gym for Brainiacs
a = 0.9
r = 0.1
Sinfinite = a / (1 - r)
= 0.9 / (1 - 0.1)
= 0.9 / 0.9
= 1.
r = 0.1
Sinfinite = a / (1 - r)
= 0.9 / (1 - 0.1)
= 0.9 / 0.9
= 1.

Well maybe if you did proper maths, rather than statistics .fatman123 wrote:beatrixasdfghjk. wrote:a = 0.9

Re: Maths- Gym for Brainiacs
you can also do it informally like this (not sure if math profs will accept
0.9999... × 10 = 9.999999...
0.9999... × (9+1) = 9.999999... [by distribution rule:]
0.9999... × 9 + 0.99999.... × 1 = 9.99999....
0.9999... × 9 = 9.9999....-0.999999 = 9
0.9999... × 9 = 9
0.9999... = 1
0.9999... × 10 = 9.999999...
0.9999... × (9+1) = 9.999999... [by distribution rule:]
0.9999... × 9 + 0.99999.... × 1 = 9.99999....
0.9999... × 9 = 9.9999....-0.999999 = 9
0.9999... × 9 = 9
0.9999... = 1

Geometric series can turn into that formula after deriving it using the sigma sum symbol

Quite curious as to how you integrate a Lorenz curve to obtain the Gini coefficient, actually .fatman123 wrote:beatrixasdfghjk. wrote:Well maybe if you did proper maths, rather than statistics .fatman123 wrote:beatrixasdfghjk. wrote:a = 0.9

Re: Maths- Gym for Brainiacs
individualy speaking they dont seems like overly complex things but ive never been taught what intergration is so i have no idea what it is or how to do it, so know idea how id attack that
having said that they both seem much more like statisitcal tools then something strictly finance based but whatever, if i have to learn it ill figure it out somehow, i mean, i know at some point im going to have to teach myself stuff like integration

Re: Maths- Gym for Brainiacs
i'm ignorant when it comes to stats :[
integration is simply "the sum of values". It's not what people generally believe in-area under the curve. Though that might help, but during the third/2nd year of math, they will flush that idea out of your head.

Re: Maths- Gym for Brainiacs
i did general math, we learnt stuff like simple interest and what not
having said that the first page of my stats exam was all general math level probability, i smashed it and my friend who did 4u rekons he'd never seen any of it in his life and didnt even attempt it

heres a better question: how do you know what a Lorenz curve and that coefficent thing are? theres no way thats part of HSC economics

It's under income inequality, as well as the effects of globalisation and all that stuff.
