This is a constant question in penalty shootouts. When you don't have 5 dead-eye, ice water running through their veins penalty takers, what order do you send them out in? Do you have your best players up front, hoping to win it before putting an ungodly amount of pressure on the weaker penalty takers? On the other hand, do you put your weaker players first, hoping that they convert thereby allowing you to close with your strongest shooters.

Paolo Bento opted for a mixed approach with Moutinho, Pepe, Nani, Alves and Ronaldo. Obviously, you hope they all convert, but your stronger takers are in the 1st, 3rd and 5th positions. They key here is that Moutinho failed to convert, squandering the wonderful opportunity that Rui Patricio gave them by saving Alonso. While, I agree that it is astounding Ronaldo (arguably the best European player) never got the opportunity to take a penalty. However, I don't think it should all be blamed on him. Personally, I would've had him 1st or 3rd, guaranteeing him a chance to shoot, and putting Nani or Moutinho in 5th.

To me the biggest disappointment of the match wasn't Ronaldo's lack of a penalty, but Nani's lack of intelligence the entire game. The guy was a black hole on the pitch. The ball would go to him never to be seen or heard from again. I can't remember how many times he received the ball in a good position to play in another player or make a pass to retain possession only for him to take it and dribble directly at an opponent subsequently losing possession either from overestimating his ability/speed or falling on the ground after minimal/no contact. His performance yesterday reminded exactly why I have trouble pulling for Portugal in any international fixture. It's not Ronaldo's histrionics or Pepe's aggression. It's Nani's disgraceful paly and inability to think when he steps onto a football pitch. No wonder Alex Ferguson keeps buying wingers. Nani may be talented, but he doesn't have the intelligence to put that talent to use. He may have said, "Myself and Cristiano make up two of the best wingers in the world and our statistics for our club show that." However, yesterday only one showed up to play, and it wasn't Nani.

I like Torres, and refuse to blame him or the clubs constant failures. They all hate his guts on here.

CR fanboys are on a bumping rampage, it doesn't really work though considering the criticism was totally fair at the time. he was the biggest big game flop there was. also probably not a good time to bump them considering the recent UCL semi final
