its evident, at this age nesta has lost his speed and fitness significantly compared to his heydays, but still this legend continues to perform at highest level with his talent, grit and determination, his commitment for the club is never questioned, he always gives 110%, gives his best in what he does. one of kind, nesta, he will be so missed once he retires.

not in billion years we will get to see a brilliant world class defender like nesta, just like messi as current best footballer.

thiago silva himself has said countless times that its because of nesta that he feels secure. and its because of nesta thiago partnership, he also emerged as one of the best defenders, obviously thiago learnt a lot from nesta.

He was borderline thuggish today, with another ref he might've seen 2 yellows, and probably deserved them (one for the instance in the early 1st half, another for the one in the 55th minute).

The second one I mentioned he actually got a yellow for. The other one in the 5th minute was just as bad. No contact with the ball whatsoever and his leg just hit Messi at thigh-high. They were both tactical fouls, but tactical fouls should get yellows.

Do not see at all how that was a yellow. Deserved foul yes but not a yellow.

2nd tackle was a moment that literally saved our team given Messi would have skinned past the open defence.

But bothers me is how you label it as a thuggish display.

Perhaps thuggish is too strong a term, all I meant to say is that with another ref he might've been sent off, so his performance wasn't as clean as some suggest.

I'll have to watch a replay of that 5th minute foul, but my initial reaction was that it was yellow worthy because it was quite obvious he never even intended to touch the ball.

I would say his performance isn't as clean as suggested if he actually intended tackles and failed to do so.

Yet, these tactical fouls were the result of a decision by Nesta in the context that he literally had no chance to make a clean tackle in the given physical situation which is why he had to resort to a tactical foul. So in essence, I would label it more as smart (but risky) decision making as tactical fouls to me is an underrated skill.

Plus, the rest of his performance and intelligent reading of todays' game deservedly overshadows these instances.

BarrileteCosmico what you also need to realize is even if Nesta had received that yellow in the first five minutes, he's a smart enough defender to adjust his game and he would've never been in the situation or had he been in the situation he wouldn't have tackled to concede a second yellow.

This man is 36 years old and he's taking on a man with the quickest acceleration and dribbling ability arguably of all time, NESTA IS PHENOMENAL. Insane, ONE OF THE GREATEST of all time! The best I've ever seen!

barca fans please stop labelling anyone who stops your attacking style as a thug or stoke.. its stupid , shows low level of maturity and failure to accept other styles, other teams, other players

nesta had a damn fine performance yesterday , a couple of tactical fouls here and there not much wrong.. you have to do that in order to stop a goat like messi

great match from the milan backline.. i dont know if allegri is world class or not, but he certainly is very astute

Was great.

Regarding his thug tackle, you saw by his look that it was tactical. When he was handed a yellow he gave a "OK" look and "what the hell was I supposed to do instead?"

In reality any defender would have done the same thing in his position.

I love Nesta, I consider him one, if not the best defender of my lifetime.

However, I wouldnt exactly praise his performance. He really didnt do anything.

Messi got by him easily and constantly and all he could do was foul.

I enjoyed the foul he did on Messi and the look of "yeah, I know, I know. High tackle, yellow card, let's get on with it." And Messi himself looked like he understood why he got fouled...after the initial reaction of getting a hip height tackle of course.

A legendary defender who I always loved and thought he would have been retired by now but it seems I'm totally wrong. To think he is a Lazio product...sigh
