There won't be any homeless if you make it illegal to be homeless just like the communist USSR did in early 20th century lmfao

The specific consequences for being homeless varied, but they could include being detained, sent to labor camps, or facing other punitive measures

communism

Didn't know about this thread until it was bumped, but I largely agree with Sports' OP.

Right here in Detroit, there are 16 vacant houses for every 1 homeless person in the city. Nationally, it's 28 vacant houses per 1 homeless person.

This is a poverty problem. Solve it and the homeless crisis abates.

Instead, the Supreme Court just gave cities the power to criminalize homelessness. We're going in the opposite direction on this issue.

NPR has a fantastic podcast called Throughline that really digs into issues like this one. Their latest episode focuses on poverty, which is one of the chief causes of homelessness. Well worth a listen.

It's not really a poverty problem but a housing stock problem. If you think back to 100 years ago a person could rent a room in a bad neighborhood in a super cramped house for mad cheap. It wasn't ideal housing situation but many newly emigrated people made due that way until they got their start.

Now if youre and adult and you want/need a living situation in dorm like conditions you probably won't be able to find it in most of the US. This is because over the past century these kinds of housing options have been outlawed and no longer exist. So a necessary layer in the housing stock has been removed entirely and people go from their own apartment/house to the street.

And once you're in the street you run into violence, drugs, etc and that just ensures you stay there.

Wages haven't kept up with rising costs though over the last few decades. That has forced people below the poverty line. Once there, the chances of homelessness go up significantly.

Yeah it's all connected. Easier than ever to fall into homelessness considering home prices. Also a supply issue, if supply had kept up with demand prices wouldn't have risen so much.
