-The CL is being expanded from 32 to 36 teams: 1 to the 5th largest league, 2 to the teams with the highest UEFA coefficients that weren't able to qualify and 1 to the highest league champion that didn't qualify
-Groups are being scrapped, and everyone will share a single league
-10 games will be played by each team, 5 home and 5 away
-The top 8 will automatically qualify for the last 16
-The top 9-24 will have a seeded knockout to make the last 16
-Bottom teams no longer feed into Europa league
-UEFA in talks with investment banks over 5B stake in project

Re: UEFA Champions League New Format (2024/25 onwards)
So much for the pyramid, 4 new slots just to protect the biggest teams and make sure they're always there, even if they don't have the performance to back it up
More games, but they mean less, as 75% of the teams move on to the next round anyways
Seeded knockout will also ensure that the biggest teams are always the favorites to go through and don't kick each other out too early
...The ESL might not be happening, but this is definitely bringing us a few steps closer to that direction. I'm surprised the clubs complained at all with such a sweet deal coming their way.

Re: UEFA Champions League New Format (2024/25 onwards)
There are rumors that, given events the past 2 days, this is not going to be the final format in the sense that the elite teams will have to earn it more.
But that may be just sensationalist journalism.
I don't hate it honestly. You're not taking opportunities from anyone, which is key here.

Re: UEFA Champions League New Format (2024/25 onwards)
I do kind of hate it. There's no group of death, no drama, the group stage will not mean anything at all. Why even turn in to watch meaningless matches?
Today Barca goes to Russia and you know there's a decent chance they lose that game and it matters. In 4 years they lose that game but who cares, 9 more to go. Big teams will probably face each other more, but the stakes are lower.

Re: UEFA Champions League New Format (2024/25 onwards)
It's more akin to league play than cup play early on... I agree. So each game on its own means a little less. But in the end, the best teams are more likely to move on to elimination rounds.
It's not as spectacular early on... but I watch football with less an eye on the final result unless it's a team I'm interested in. I'm curious about performances.
Also BC, the galactico era we've seen over the past 20-25 years is over imo. Big clubs just can't afford it. So i think games get a lot more interesting.

So Champions League is becoming Super League, just keeping the name.

Re: UEFA Champions League New Format (2024/25 onwards)
Keep in mind that the EPL teams, who will have the most money, will have 5 teams in there guaranteed... let's say Man U, City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester City. My guess is that 1 of the extra high coefficient teams will be EPL too... so call it Tottenham.
Germany will have 5 teams... Bayern, Dortmund, Leipzig, etc.
Spain... Madrid, Atletico, Barca, Sevilla and Villareal
Italy... Inter, Juve, Atalanta, AC MIlan, Lazio
France... PSG, Lille, Lyon, Monaco and OM (lol)
Add Porto, etc.
Out of these... 30 good teams I'll call it, only 8 make it automatically in the round of 16 after the first 10 pool games. The other 22 have to play an extra elimination round.
I think a lot of them will want to make they make the top 8.

You're not this daft. You still have to make top 5 and this extra 2 "coefficient teams" will have a lot of competiton.
So everyone will need to make top 5 in their leagues... which is by no means guaranteed by some of those so called "founder" clubs.
With finances evening out, the elite aren't going to be able to pay the transfer fees for the next few years = much more parity.
These so-called "elite teams" are afraid of EPL and the fact that their success is no longer guaranteed by the money gap they've enjoyed the past 25 years.
That's the point.

So if we finish 10th and Betis finish 4th they'll get shafted for us because we have a higher coefficient?

Hang on, Ligue will have top 5 in it for example doesnt sound right? U could argue Serie A having 5 the same as EPL is strange too, unless of course if the Serie A teams earn it by doing well in previous year or so like how it works today?

No, if you finish 10th and Betis finish 4th, Betis qualifies and you stay home.
What you call "this shit" is exactly what Florentino wants, Madrid qualifying regardless of league position.

Re: UEFA Champions League New Format (2024/25 onwards)
That play off round between teams placed 9th to 24th sounds needless and boring since they will be seeded but whatever that generates more money with more guaranteed matches since its not about quality right?
But it says Other competitions will also adopt similar format!!!
Europa league Group stage even more Cancerous ffs
Was hoping they scrap its Group stage and make it Pure knock out comp like old Uefa cup...
But if such a thing was in place since 2017, then i think Arsenal would have never missed out on CL Football due to Co-efficient points

You've got that backwards
Arsenal had good coefficient points as Wenger never had you miss CL.
now is a different story
