Definitely wasn't expecting this one

(this site doesn't usually post transfer rumors unless they are close to completion, Heinze has arrived at the Roma airport)

Not official yet, Bologna and Lazio are also interested. I think he's close to joining us, but Bologna have offered a a slightly better contract.

Re: Heinze signs for Roma
Gabriel Heinze is on his way to Italy to sign a one-year contract at Roma, reports La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The veteran defender has been linked with the Giallorossi recently and it seems that a deal has been done.
Heinze, who can play as a left-back or in the middle, is available on a free after Marseille announced at the start of June that he would leave the club.
The 33-year-old, whose agreement will include an option for a second season, is vastly experienced and has won 71 caps for Argentina.
Roma needed a new centre-back after losing French international Philippe Mexes to Milan on a Bosman.
Heinze has played for such illustrious clubs as Manchester United and Real Madrid in his career.
:lol!:

If only they sold Mexes... in their infinite wisdom, they let him go for FREE lol. And the funny thing is that Mexes wanted to resign with Roma and then just got finally fed up. As someone here said, Roma is the "Arsenal" of Serie A.

That's a very popular thought actually.....it was more because we used to play like Arsenal though. Not because our transfer oddities are like Arsenal's.

And I highly doubt Heinze will be seen as a like-for-like replacement for Mexes. CB is a secondary position for him.

Sorry to say it, but this is not the way to go. Terrible signing.
Is he going to replace Mexes, Riise, or he is just coming.

Not our fault that one, we could thank the intelligent bank that is Unicredit that, in the year that they were in power, managed to give away one of our best players for free... great piece of business that one. Anyways, many people think we just let him go, while Sensi actually wanted to renew his contract but was not allowed to. Unicredit was in power and didn't want to spend any money and therefore let the value of the team go down. It was a weird situation but trust me, even our old management wouldn't have been stupid enough to do that.
Anyways, I think Heinze will just serve as a substitute left back and only as an emergency center back, since we are looking at Kjaer and Silvestre as well. I personally don't oppose this transfer, we need some depth.

Re: Heinze signs for Roma
Heinze wasn't completely terrible for Marseille. In fact, the year before last he was pretty good. He regressed this past year though.
If this is for bench depth, no problem. He's just not capable of holding his own as a starter.

i think the whole Brazilian "fat one" fiasco rubbed Mexes really wrong... that's what i've heard anyhow.

It's exactly for that. We are looking at using a young left back in Jose Angel. Burdisso, Juan and one of Silvestre/Kjaer/Bocchetti will be our center backs. Cassetti and Cicinho on the right, while Crescenzi could operate on both flanks. We also have many good youth players who we are going to slowly bring in to the first team, like Antei who is touted as the next Ubaldo Righetti. Heinze is just coming in for depth, and he's relatively cheap.

Re: Heinze signs for Roma
would be an useful option for Roma if he is a squad player.Experienced versatile defender on free to increase their squad depth is an useful deal for Roma IMO.

He's not replacing anyone. He's a depth signing. Just need another body on the bench at the back. Jose Angel will probably be our first choice LB.

How is that needed, nick?St_Nick09_of_Goal wrote:a barca coach is always in need of shitty defenders, just normal
Surprised at the strong reactions some people have towards him, as a depth signing I think it's great.

Re: Heinze signs for Roma
As depth, he may be good. For a starting place no.
But what I mean by saying terrible signing was, that after letting Mexes go, I mean they should have replaced him with someone of similar if not better quality.
For depth, he is good. It is these kind of players that make you a big team. Well, not exactly these kind but those who can play different positions.

Well, he's experienced and has a monster header.
I'm still expecting those big gun signings from Roma, though.

Isla was linked with us for quite a while....nothing actually came of it though. I'd still be mighty surprised to see him at Udinese come Matchday 1.
