Why didnt Leverkusen release Son in 2014?

Son's career is pretty much over after Saturday. Not to be a homer, but THAT Korean side isnt going to beat Japan. Sorry, but its true. Hope he's ready for 2 years of public service.

The bigger question is:

"Why didnt leverkusen let him go play on home soil for the games in 2014?"

Sad end to one of the best players in the premier league today.

In case of defeat (judging from the most recent world cup Japan seems a better team)

He's just 26 since july, will come back at 28, still in his prime and arguably in better shape than ever. Besides i read he will join Sangju Sangmu FC during his military service so he won't completely fade away from football, they play in K-League.

I read somewhere that since he is a top athlete he can postpone the military service until he is 33

Also Japan is playing with all u21 players in their team, they finished second in their group and lost to Vietnam. Korea has the advantage of their wildcards (3 players above 23) they have Son, their great GK from WC and another attacker who is the top scorer of the tournament.

On paper, Korea should win.

Even if he loses, Son can just obtain British citizenship and never go back to South Korea, easy smoking
