Kosovo became a member of the International Olympic Committee two years ago. This is a country's debut at the games and Majlinda Klemendi got a gold for judo (women's 52 kg).

The best part of the story is that she was training all these years in buildings with no heat, she was doing several hours training at -10. She had only her trainer, no other staff, no doctor and so on, but still managed to become world number one and now even get olympic gold. She got many offers from other countries to represent them but she refused even though she was training in miserable conditions because she wanted to get gold to inspire young people of a very poor, post-war country that if you put your mind and work really hard you can achieve great things!

Olympia has a lot of sports that somehow don't really have any lobby in Germany... AFAIK we don't even have a proper water polo national team o_O

I just tried to find out a bit about it - apparently the problem in Germany is that there is no sponsoring whatsoever for water polo and so the players can only play it as hobby and usually have to take vacation from work for tournaments and they more often than not can't go as they have to work...

That's basically all sport in Denmark Laughing

Think football is the only one you can have as a legit job unless you're out in the world beasting.

Even then everyone is going to university etc. to get an education for when it ends.

I'd say handball here is sufficiently professional, just as cycling is (well, at least for the bigger names) and probably most winter sports (at least the winter sports athletes show up in quite some advertising during the winter months).

Oh, and quite some top athletes are "Sportsoldaten" (= sports soldiers), that is they are members of the Bundeswehr (armed forces of Germany) where their main job is to train for their sports.
