Re: Would Pele be top 10 player today?
i love the answer @benin posted, with reference to plato. as well as the answer by @the demon of carthage. difficult to compare eras, but you know what? we know this already.
threads like these are getting tiring, and quite disturbing. there is already the messi appreciation thread and the "important percentage" (whatever that means) thread where you can discuss his genius (which he is, whether you like his footy or not). we all see through the bullshit, the aim of such threads is, "well the old player can't play today since the game is 'faster', therefore messi equals greatest of all time", quit it, and stick to the "important contribution" argument, at least that argument provided for comic relief and gave everyone, including the poster (i don't see how you can keep a straight face while posting that) a fantastic laugh.

lol wow, really? we are using 'space jam' as a tool for discussions nowadays? give it a rest, compare messi with the guys he's playing with and assess his contributions with regards to the modern game. aliens aren't taking any athletes powers and bugs bunny and messi/lebron aren't shooting a sequel to save planet earth
btw, even if pele scored half of his goals against mechanics and janitors (which imo is just an attempt for people to slander the man's legacy), that's still over 600 plus goals to his name, a super impressive ratio. and from what we've heard (never saw him play) its not like when he met european opposition he shrunk, even guys like trapattoni, ceasar maldini, bobby moore, beckenbauer to name a few, praised the man's genius; that at least should stand for something.
that one great arrives, is no need to slander another or act like what the other did was garbage...its not mutually exclusive; arrival of new star doesn't equate to the earlier star being garbage

Messi would have quit playing at 18 after the beatings taken from the defenders of the time.

20 years from now some random guy on goallegacylegacy would post a thread complaining how Messi's 7 golden balls mean shit and that futunaldo is better and grandmonica would counter by the tackles/headers ratio while proving that if Messi wasnt rapped in jail he would have won more.

Almost sure he wouldn't. Football has improved a lot from that time.

Re: Would Pele be top 10 player today?
To be as good back then as he was, he had to have been very talented.
If you say that he played against a lot of semi-pros, remember that the coaching Pele received would be considered amateur level at best today.
So if you transplant prime Pele into todays footballing world, you can be sure that he'd have 20lbs of muscle mass packed on, and would've been in advanced tactics and techniques coaching programs since he would've been nine years old.
The argument of lack of quality of his opposition is moot, we can only look at a player like Pele and go "yeah he's pretty talented" and that's it. His footballing education would be a lot better today, just like his opponents would be.
Wow, that's a lot of text for a useless discussion. I amaze myself.

Re: Would Pele be top 10 player today?
Neymar would be better than pele today? What's more to hear in this forum? Lol, neymars agent is a complete retard!!
People go on and on about Pele scoring against amateurs and farmers, but then say he was surround by top class team mates all through the 4 world cups he participated in..
So how was the 1,200 goals happening with only him on the pitch? Weren't other players playing against amateurs too?
Can't we all equally say messi is/was surrounded by the greatest club team of all time? Yet, look at his performances for the supposed mediocre Argentina flopping hard in all competitions outside Europe.
It's like people saying Neymar was playing against scrubs in thug America and would never shine in Europe, yet the golazos and the multiple 40+ goals a season and awards as a teenager was happening with only him in SA at that time. He basically won everything in thug America.
Yet the scrub nerman came to Europe and banged 40 goals in the almighty Europe, winning the biggest club trophies only in his second season.
Pele 3 WC still, messi none. Involvessi failed again, just get used to it already.
