I can't tbh. Hummels was still included by many on here, certainly Mole, in the 'best CBs 2014' list although he had a terrible season, it's only a recent development GL has caught on to the years old news from Bundesliga that Hummels is continually struggling to reach his 2012 top form.

He's certainly not getting an especially rough treatment lol.

There are other examples of CBs who keep being criminally and absurdly underrated though

I think we can all agree here that talent doesnt matter. Performances do, they make and they break players.

There are plenty of defenders who werent known in their early twenties and who when they reached maturity started dominating the game.

Look at GOdin for example, he i probably the best and most consistent performer at CB for the past 3 years yet people hardly talk about him. A real shame.

Haven't watched Dortmund consistently for about 18 months, that opinion was based on what i have seen of him.

He consistently would get shit making 1 mistake and stopping about 20 attacks and nobody else would get anywhere near the same criticism for being a lot worse.

But none the less, a Bayern fan hating on a ex Bayern youth product

Smalling was actually pretty great 2nd half of the season, at least what I saw

Utd should trust in him imo.

Smallinng just need to play with a CB that knows what he is doing and can lead. Ramos can provide that.

Pretty sure van Gaal still wants his LCB RCB combo with the respective left and right foot

Other than some games this past season... Varane has been insanely good even when called upon after weeks of not being used. CL Final and classicos are prime examples. This season, he's looked out of sorts at times... and that's because he was often being used as a LCB when, prior to this season, he was exclusively a RCB and Pepe's replacement.

It's like Ramos playing RCB or Pepe LCB... they can't do it so they're never asked to. But for some reason, Varane should somehow magically be able to do it at an elite level no problem while only playing 1 out of 3 games. Although i don't understand why Ramos is so shat as a RCB since he was a RB... but that's another discussion

So yeah... let him be a regular in one position and i'm willing to bet the farm that he'll dominate. I'd prefer that he play RCB since that's where he's been at his best by far. But if he's supposed to replace Ramos... then LCB it is. It may take a month or two for him to really settle there... but he will

Outside madrid and some barca fans, I don't see any Varane hype. I don't think he's really talked as much as before.

But if you're a football fan, and you see a 19/20-ish defender close down two of the best players of his time, it's hard not to take notice and get excited. How many defenders of his age are in a position to say that? I can look past his errors, which is result of a no. of factors. That sprint he made down the wing in a recent game (can't remember the opponent) suggests he really hasn't lost much pace despite injuries. The boy has all the tools to be an elite player. It would be a shame if he doesn't go on to fullfil his talent. Though I hope he does it elsewhere.
