According to the Valencia media if they sell Otamendi they will get Garay, who is a former Real player and was heavily linked with United under SAF hmm

The only thing that worries my about Otamendi is that he was underwhelming at Porto towards the end... which is why Porto only got 12 mil for him from Valencia. That's the Porto equivalent of dumping a player.

Now he had a very good season at Valencia. Is last season a trend or an aberration? We'll see.

Ramos is definitely overrated. His winning headers masks his defensive failings. He's decent. As a pure defender, nothing special.

Hummels, another pretty boy, who I used to swoon over until lately. He's glorious on the ball and aerially stupendous. But his lack of pace is an handicap and his attitude stinks. He was absolutely tragic last season in terms of organising his defense, whilst individually displaying poor anticipation. Contrary to popular belief, he's no leader.

Thiago Silva: His injuries have hampered his consistency, and by the looks of it his other manly traits.

Godin and Pepe: may not 've the marketing machine behind them, but they are your only no-nonsense defenders in the game, who don't 've to do fancy-shancy stuff on the ball to stand out in their roles.

Ota has had a stellar season, but until he does it over an extended period, I'd be cautious to rate him amongst the best.

Piqué: brilliant sec half. But motivation has always been an issue with him and his off-pitch joker role makes an appearance in-game from time to time. Again, I'm wary to praise him too highly because you never know when his waka waka version re-appears.

Varane, Marcos, Giménez, Laporte: all talented youngsters. But the frenchman is marked for greatness if developed well.
If he was @ Barca, he'd be starting for us week in week out.
A natural talent whose physical and technical attributes trumps his peers. I'm sad he's not a blaugrana.

the kid has done nothing special yet, he is good no doubt about it and he is special because of his age and potential but as of now he isn't shit.. cannot even start over ramos

you madrid fans are hilarious.. when varane was 20 some of you special kids compared him to puyol.. now your trying to compare him to pique
funny thing is since he was 20 he hasn't accomplished anything, he is still in the bench doing almost nothing whereas pique is leading our defense to treble winning season

After 3 seasons of being shit, Pique suddenly has 3 good months and he is a beast CB ? in the first half of the season everyone was calling for his head and wanted him gone. Some were wondering what team was willing to pay 15m for him. Varane was good everytime he played in the last 3 seasons.

What has Pique done to be considered special ? Flop in the WC final only to be saved by Iker twice ?

He's proven nothing? How about taking over a France defense in shambles with Rami-Mexes meltdown in Euros and then Mbiwa/Sakho, Sakho/Abidal, etc. to become the rock on defense that took France to the WC and then keyed their defense to the WC quarters with all his partners falling like flies with injury... how about being a rock in the CL final... how about being the best player on the pitch, defense or otherwise, against Barca in the CDR win over Barca two years ago... i can go on and on.

The only wrong foot he had put forward in his entire career prior to some inconsistency in this one was the Hummels goal which wasn't a mistake either.... he just got beat by strength as Hummels was just bigger. If you're going to hold that against him... then Nesta was crap because he got beaten by Govou for the last second equalizer in the Euro 2000 final AND then gave up the golden goal to Trezeguet as he lost his man in the surface.

So are people calling Nesta's greatness into question too because of that? I can point to EVERY SINGLE great CB in the past 30 years that i've watched who had a lesser season at some point (early or late in their career)... and i mean all of them. And none of them were being played part time and in different positions either... it just happens.

why would someone compare a kid who plays less than 15 games a season, most game as a sub
to a guy who played 40+ games a season.
and then try saying who had a better 3 season.
pique won more, pique has been more influential so i would take pique.

he had an inconsistent season this past year because he was played at LCB for the first time in his career more than 50% of the time he played. Is that a criticism? Is leading his NT to the WC quarters not an achievement? Is being the best defender on the pitch and one of the best players in the CL Final nothing? Is ruining Barca in both legs and scoring 2 out of the 4 goals scored in the 2 legs to beat them (let alone dominate the defensive side) nothing?

Also he has a lot more mistakes than that, i could sit here a long time listing them like the time Nani wrecked him for Man Yoo and he was saved by the referee and Drogba backing him down so far he was under the goal line like prime Shaq rofl

There are more and would be more if he could consistently start, you ask people not to troll and then claim he's better than defenders that have consistently been there and done it several times over and then claim he never makes mistakes rofl

Varane played 3400 minutes this season. That's a bunch. Not like he's been warming our bench. Pretty sure all 3 of our defenders played the same amount. He was our second best after Pepe. Ramos the worst of the 3.
