the point is that an older, washed up defender who lost most of his athletic ability was able to handle prime Messi better than the new breed of CB's .

Nesta made his debut in 1993 ,he's part of the last great generation of Cb's .
it's not like i didn't include the early 2000's in that era, that's when Nesta was in his prime .

No.But point is 90s-00s CB's would've been placed on the same level of scrutiny and bashed incessantly due to one or two errors here and there as they do now with the current crop of CB's if GL ever existed back then.

It didn't decline, it changed. Defenders now are expected to be the first line of attack, so they've had to learn how to play with the ball at their feet. Defending is now more collective, so the individual Hollywood tackles have made way for more positional awareness. Defenders are less flashy today but arguably more effective.

There's an old saying " Great offence will always beat great defense" If Messi or Ronaldo or someone of that talent want to do something there's barely anything anyone can do to stop it, limit it yes but stop it ? no.

Nesta is the best CB i have seen in my life time personally.

I'd like to add that the leniency in the game evolved besides the tactics, 10 years ago a semi-harsh tackle was usually swept aside and players continue, nowadays a simple jostle may implicate a yellow card
