Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu stadium set to be renamed Abu Dhabi Bernabéu.
http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/jan/28/santiago-bernabeu-abu-dhabi-bernabeu-real-madrid
after the " scandal " of microscopic cross removal from the team's logo in some markets, i can't wait for the self righteous hypocritical crowd to make a big deal about a normal modern practice just because Madrid is doing it .

Yep because new stadiums being named after sponsors is exactly the same as stadiums with long storied history and tradition
I doubt there's many Madrid fans that are happy with this.

And in the opposite direction, the HSV got their old stadium name back and soon will play again in the Volksparkstadion as it was and not anymore in the Imtech Arena

i was just about to use Hamburg as an example of a team that always had its stadium named after sponsors for over a decade .

let's not pretend that the popular name of the stadium isn't " the Bernabeu "... which will still be intact .

HSV sponsor Kühne decided to buy the naming rights for the stadium for the next 4 years and will rename it to the old name from 1 July 2015 on. Cool idea IMO.farfan wrote:i was just about to use Hamburg as an example of a team that always had its stadium named after sponsors for over a decade .

Let's put it this way, if Arsenal owners did this with Highbury back in the day there would have been uproar.
Emirates has no history or tradition so not so much, you have to be pretty stupid to not see the difference. There isn't a single stadium with history and tradition that has been renamed for money and sponsor purposes.

The fans of Young Boys Bern started a petition to get their old stadium name back, too. In my opinion that is one of the cases where the new name is actually an improvement, though. Their stadium is atm called "Stade de Suisse" and they really want to have their "Wankdorf Stadion" back

It's not a big deal to me. The stadium will continue to carry the last name of our founder and it's all that matter. We are not scrapping history away, we are adjusting to modern times. We will all continue calling it "The Bernabeu". They are financing our stadium renovation for 500 mil, the naming right is a small price to pay.

As a RM fan, I would be God damn pissed for a name change like that. But at the same time, I always read that Don Santiago never actually wanted his name to be on the stadium in the first place.
Anyway you take it, that would not sit well with most RM fans. In Spain and around the world.

They're paying for most of the 500 million renovation AND 20 mil per season... i think it's well worth it. Funny as hell though.
With Barca's main jersey sponsor being Qatar airways and Madrid now calling their stadium the Abu Dhabi Bernabeu... can we please stop calling certain clubs "oil clubs". It would be the height of hypocrisy. Not that GL isn't known for its hypocrites though

Arsenal's main stadium and overall sponsor is Emirates Airlines... hence the stadium being called the Emirates and "Fly Emirates" plastered in front of their jersey.M99 wrote:OK so let's call Madrid and Barca oil clubs too, problem solved
Heck, Milan has "Emirates" plastered in front of its jersey too.

Stadium sponsorship is all right, but calling a stadium in Madrid by another city's name is pretty lol.
Waiting for Moscow Bridge and Beijing Trafford etc.
