Illarra or Khedira
So Modric is out for an undefined period. First reports said 5-6 weeks, now Marca says 2-3 months. Marca also says that Illarra will play considering Khedira's contract situation.
- Spoiler:
- Luka Modric had to be taken off the pitch in the 26th minute of the match between Italy and Croatia due to a groin strain.
The Croatian midfielder came to an unexpected halt following a sprint and the player himself signalled that he couldn't carry on.
The incident happened whilst Modric was fighting for the ball with an Italian player in the middle of the park.
A few seconds later he was limping noticeably. The midfielder was trying to stop an Italian counter attack, but his run came to an abrupt halt and he had to lie down on the grass immediately, made all the more uncomfortable by the heavy rain that had been falling in Milan, causing flooding in various parts of the city that threatened to suspend the game.
The player received medical attention on the pitch but had to abandon the playing field for further treatment. Shortly afterwards, clearly in a lot of discomfort and visibly holding his hand to his groin, the player was helped into the dressing room by coaching staff and Mateo Kovacic came on as his replacement in the 27th minute.
It just so happens that on the 16th November, 2013, during a friendly between Italy and Germany played in the very same Giuseppe Meazza stadium (1-1), Sami Khedira also got injured, following a collision with Andrea Pirlo.
On that occasion, Sami Khedira suffered a serious knee injury and had to undergo surgery as a result of the incident.
- Spoiler:
- Boris Nemec, the head of the Croatian FA's medical department, believes that Luka Modric may be sidelined for up to six weeks.
In the worst-case scenario, this would almost definitely mean the midfielder missing out on the Club World Cup in Morocco.
"It doesn't look good. It looks like a quadriceps strain, so in my opinion he will be out for four to six weeks", Nemec told the Croatian media.
Modric's account of the injury does not provide grounds for optimism: "I felt a twinge in a previous move but I tried to carry on, and then that's when I felt a much stronger pain".
- Spoiler:
- As soon as he touched down in Madrid, Luka Modric underwent an MRI scan to ascertain the exact extent of his injury. Real Madrid released a medical report after the test which diagnosed the midfielder with an injury to his left groin and, although it did not say how long the Croat is expected to be out, it could be two to three months.
- Spoiler:
- Luka Modric's injury could theoretically open the door for Sami Khedira to enjoy a regular run in the team for the first time since he sustained his serious knee injury last year. However, the club is pushing towards Illarra getting the nod instead, despite Carlo Ancelotti having shown on several occasions that he prefers the German.
The reasons are political: Khedira has rejected a number of new contract offers over the last 12 months - Real Madrid have not heard from his agents since July - and will be free to sign a pre-contract elsewhere in just 43 days.
While Ancelotti and the club see eye to eye on the fact that the 27-year-old should not be allowed to leave in January under any circumstances, they disagree on how the contract rebel should be treated. Nevertheless, the higher-ups won't cause any trouble if the coach ultimately does decide to use the Germany international.
Interestingly, Toni Kroos's arrival at the club was supposed to be as a replacement for Khedira, but no bids came in for the former Stuttgart man and Xabi Alonso ended up leaving for Bayern Munich instead.
What's more, Bayern's shadow continues to loom over the Bernabéu, as there are fears that the Bavarian outfit has an agreement with the anchorman. The argument is that the Bundesliga champions are keen to snap up one of the few Germany stars to elude their grasp so far, and in the process gain a measure of revenge for Kroos's departure, as it hurts to see the 24-year-old shining so brightly in white.

Re: Illarra or Khedira
give both atleast 1 or 2 chance, we got 3 months to fill... see who perform better
illarra should really grab this opportunity and live up to it.

Illarra, because he's a better passer. Plus Kroos would attack more and he's better at attacking than Khedira is.

Is Casemiro an option during this upcoming transfer window?

Khedira. Him & Kroos can play together. Ideally we'd sell Sami & play Casemiro, but that's not an option. Illara=Gago. Not Madrid quality.

Carlo said on radio that the two options to replace Modric will be Isco or Khedira. No mention of Illara.

Re: Illarra or Khedira
I don't know, after I saw Madrid loose the midfield to every single opposition midfield -including 2nd division teams-, I'm a bit worried of seeing Khedira play. Even if it wasn't his fault back then. At the same time, I don't know how a midfield of James, Isco, and Kroos will look like.
Kedira has looked decent in the few matches he played recently, but I'd like to see a midfield of Isco, Kroos, James, and Bale. See how it works.

eal Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that they will not be dipping into the transfer market to replace the injured Luka Modric. The midfielder has been ruled out for three months after suffering a torn thigh muscle in Croatia's Euro 2016 qualifier with Italy. However, Ancelotti is adamant Madrid have the resources to cope with the setback and are not in need of January reinforcements."No, Real Madrid will not be buying in January, because we are able to replace Modric," Ancelotti told Radio Nacional de Espana."We have other important players for this type of situation."Last year we had the same problem with the injury to [Sami] Khedira. We'll fix it by putting in another midfielder."We have the option of replacing him with Khedira, [Asier] Illarramendi and finally, we have the option of Isco, who does not have the habit of playing in the position but I think he can do it in some games."We have [Alvaro] Medran, a youngster from Castilla who is doing very well and we like him. He may be an option at least to be with us."Leaders Real Madrid return to La Liga action on Saturday when they visit Eibar.

Re: Illarra or Khedira
good move, we don't need any midfield signings; we have more than enough and we've got people sitting on the bench who need games. it helps boost their confidence, and there's nobody out there we can sign that will add anything to this team who isn't cup tied.....we should NOT even sign a midfielder in the summer, we are stacked in that department, but we all know how florentino perez thinks

Re: Illarra or Khedira
Pogba wil come at some point. Be it 2015 or 16, depends on when Modric leaves. But Carlo likes Modric too much to sell him next summer. So I guess in 2016.

Re: Illarra or Khedira
@valkyrja, carlo liked di maria too, lol. but 2016 is a long time, anything can happen between now and then, even this summer...if we can maintain our form and the players keep delivering on the pitch, then i see no reason to spend big....if, God forbid the team goes through a major mental block and we just so happen throw titles away, then as per usual the squad might need some shaking up....
i just hope people don't heap much pressure on khedira or illara who both haven't gotten consistent games. khedira especially, the dude is meant to do the dirty job and tackle, fans shouldn't expect fancy long passes or huge pass accuracy total from him, it just won't happen. but as i mentioned earlier, based on his national team games, he seems to blossom alongside kroos

Re: Illarra or Khedira
Madrid fans do appreciate defensive works. The only difference between "standing-ovations-every-game isco" and "he's-decent-enough-for-the-team Isco" of last year, is his defensive shifts. Same thing with Modric, they guys gets an applaud every time he makes a tackle, even if he didn't play particularly well that same day.
It's to Khedira to bring something to the team, instead of just running all the time and not contributing meaningfully to any of our phases.

Khedira injured again
Don't know how long for, but its frustrating. I wouldn't be surprised if he played more for the German NT than us since signing.
Isco is the man for the job. No way Illara gets game time ahead of Isco.

Kramer at least publicly said he isn't too keen to go back to Neverkusen when his loan spell at BMG is up...
