Patrick Vieira retires
Didn't see a thread in the general section on this surprisingly.
Invented the B2B midfield role imo. Best there ever was in terms of being the complete footballer in that role, offensively and defensively. There was literally nothing on the field he wasn't good/great at. He would just dominate games.
During the gunners' golden years, he was the boss and general, not Henry. Most Arsenal fans will agree with me i'm sure.
One of the all time greats.

Re: Patrick Vieira retires
Vieira was probably the best holding midfielder in the world when he was in his prime. Top quality player and I wish the game had more like him.

What can you say about Vieira ?
The fact wenger calls him his best ever signing ahead of Henry says enough really.
Best B2B player ever. The most complete midfielder PL ever saw. A legend in the game

I would'nt call him the greatest ever, but he's up there.
On the same tier as Matthaus, Rijkaard and Gullit among others. But they are so great i would'nt like to say which one is better than the other.

None of those guys were near as complete a player as Vieira. As far as B2Bs go, he's the best ever.

I did'nt say they were more complete, i said they might have been better.
People argue Ronaldinho is more complete than Messi but is Ronaldinho better? again its doubtful.
No arguments from me that Viera was indeed the most complete B2B ever but the best? iam not sure i agree.

In the very narrow scope of B2B mids, I just don't see anyone that close. Rijkaard was good, but not in the same league imo. Redondo probably has the best argument with Vieira if you look at a 3-4 year span, not career. Gullit was an offensive player... didn't have the same role as Vieira. Matthaus was very solid; but again, not the dominant offensive+defensive force of a Vieira.
When you look at the overall game of Vieira, his excellence at everything (everything was very strong, including his air game) and his club + NT success, he's the best ever imo. The amount of time he was elite was amazing too.
Btw, Ronaldinho in his prime was every bit as good as Messi. It just didn't last very long for well known reasons. If Messi somehow fell off a cliff today performance-wise, they would be very, very close.

I agree with everything here, i just consider some of them better, but not as great at everything like Vieira was.
Anyway about the Ronaldinho and Messi comparison i was going to use the CR7 and Messi comparision but we all know how that would have gone so steered clear of that.
And i agree with your reply on that aswell.....
Anyway i have said my piece on the matter and you have said your's now lets get back to praising Patrick Vieira the best midfielder to ever grace the EPL and his lovely smile

Re: Patrick Vieira retires
Was one of the best CMs i have ever seen,He had the ability to dominate the centre of the game single handedly just like makelele but in a different way.Was the focal point of INVINCIBLE arsenal superior to gilberto silva.
I think arsenal didnt miss him instantly because gilberto was a viera mini version, but they eventually missed him.He was simply one of the best all rounders i have ever seen. seriously has the spot on par with redondo but with slighly less technicality but superior game reading and destructive play.

There are some genuinely smart and funny people on there. Then there's those who think everything is inferior to United
Plus, the place turns into a free-for-all circus when United lose a game

Probably true lol. As an avid France NT follower in the 80s, i pretty much hate everything that had to do with the cheating German NT of that period. Very biased against them.

Re: Patrick Vieira retires
It's kind of hard to compare the two of them, considering Ballack was more attacking, while Vieira was more defensive.TheBlueArmy wrote:hate to be a party pooper, but I think ballack was better/more complete than vieira
