Seen somewhere links about another lb coming, hopefully its someone decent enough to push him, great player but just too lax about defending when its half his job, bothers me to where sweet dribbling doesn't make it less glaring at times, and not enough of the fanbase and media gets on him for that, makes him overrated imo.

Seeing Marcelo play for Tite's Brazil makes me hate Madrid's Marcelo. There he defends, covers and hold his position much more.

If he holds his position at lb for Madrid who will carry the ball into attack there? Kroos can't and Ronaldo can't and goes central so there is literally noone else that can do it.

Obviously he will leave space behind. It's just common sense. Brazil are a lot more stable and the attacking left sided player be it Nerman or Coutinho track back so Marcelo isn't caught out. Doesn't change his skill set.

He is essentially Madrids winger/ball carrier and almost their most versatile attacker.

@jibers I disagree Marcelo can play more balanced and still influence the attack, he did it before in a Madrid shirt he chooses not to do it, why is he always at the halfway line for majority of game? Danilo and nacho boths play more defensively while getting in good amount of crosses just the same, Marcelo is lazy and knows fans/media will be more entertained than critical as long as he pulls off his flicks, another perfect example of this is isco or cr can be as shit as he wants just need to score and everyone else will spin it or deflect the blame to the benz's of the world.

Yes, he did it in Systems that had cover in Madrid most notably Carlos 442 where Isco was the ball carrier so he didn't have to be up high or be caught out when real lost the ball.

I agree that he could probably do better but Nacho and Danilo don't contribute anywhere near to what Marcelo does. So they might be more secure . Either way there is a gap on that right flank because CR doesn't occupy it regularly so it has always been Madrids weak point since Ronaldo joined.

The bigger the space you have to defend, the worse you will look

Don't remember exactly, but always rated fit Robben, prime Kaka, Messi, etc higher than him.

Jibers sure cr adds to that of course, but under mou the team played 4231 and Marcelo looked good after getting becnched by coentrao for couple games, as I said his influence in attack shouldn't cancel out his defensive responsibilities, look at his casual strolls when counters are happening is just insane, its like he isn't reading the flow of the game or he is chained to the halfway line.

Marcelo is experienced enough to know when to get back before a counter starts, especially when the other team is targeting you specifically or know to sit back when the team is under pressure, basic defensive awareness of what's happening around him been lacking for a player of his calibre for years tbh.

I appreciate his offensive capabilities as much as anybody, even though his crosses and shooting is decent at best, which are more important than a lot of the other things he does in the attack imo, so I'm playing more balanced, would help the team more and wouldn't hinder his overall contribution too much.

I obviously don't agree on the whole Ronaldo thing ( especially in favour of Kaka or Robben) but realistically during his prime doesn't Xavi have a case?

I mean in terms overall impact on a team winning matches and control of a football match? he obviously wasn't the athlete or explosive scorer Ronaldo was but during that period where Barcelona and Spain dominated he was literally the reason why.

I think you can make a case that he was the 2nd best in the world during parts of his prime.

07/08 season was when Cristiano scored 40 goals in all competitions (31 league, 9 goals UCL) whilst genuinely being Utd's best player in their EPL and UCL triumphs.

He pretty much was, for the very least and I'm being very nitpicking here, top 3 players that season. Actually, fk it, he was the best player that year. Robben spent a lot of time in the treatment room in Madrid and Lionel, while still a very good footballer even back then, did not have anything to speak of. Kaka was also injury prone that year.

Also, Xavi being better than Pirlo is not unpopular. Saying De La Pena or Guti is as good as Xavi could be deemed "unpopular".

I still believe that Pogba will be one of the best midfielders in the world. Not long after Mourinho leaves (or Pogba transfers out) he will explode and pick up where he was.

If Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima had the freak fitness of Messi and Ronaldo resulting in a career of 15+ consistent seasons...he would be comfortably called the greatest of all time ahead of those two and Pele n Maradona.

I didnt expect his attitude to decline this much.

It's so sad that such an immense talent is wasted in this way. When Pirlo retired and Vidal left, Marchisio got injured at the start of the season. So Pogba was, temporarily, the main man in midfield. His problem became that he tried too hard. Imagine saying that in 2019, Pogba tried too hard to do and fix everything in midfield.

Then Marchisio came back from the injury, reborn as Jesus for Juve, and straightened everything out. With such a partner, Pogba was amazingly good. With Marchisio running the midfield and Dybala to partner in attack, Pogba was one of the best midfielders in the world that season, and surely the most entertaining.

All that wasted in a sinking ship of a club, then wasted even more for fame and likes on instagram instead of performing in football.

Yeah, the boldened part makes no sense when you watch the current Pogba Razz I don't think anyone would disagree that he was a very exciting talent at Juve, and he's shown flashes of that brilliance ever since. The problem is that they're just flashes, and they don't quite compensate for the other shortcomings he's been displaying regularly in recent time. Physically gifted, mentally handicapped.

At Juve, Pogba was talented, humble and hard-working. When he signed for Utd he lost the latter 2 qualities, and his career is stalling ever since.
