The best CB's in La Liga

For me, the biggest personale weakness in the league, the lack of quality centerbacks.

Who do you are the best 5 or so?

In my opinion Diego Godin is the best CB in La Liga. Spahic was also one of the best; tactically speaking, those two came into my mind.

I always liked Puyol, but I guess his time is almost over.

Mikel Gonzalez from Real Sociedad is another beast centerback in my opinion. Maybe, many people don't rate him, but I do. He doesn't get the praise he deserves, unlike Martinez. I think Martinez is a little bit over hyped.

Varane is the best in the league and it's not even close.

Inigo Martinez is also in the top 5. The rest is kind of up for debate. Pique and Ramos on their day could be on there but their inconsistency is just downright awful. Godin is solid, but he's such a dirty player, I hate to include him.

Varane, Ramos, Pique, Godin, Martinez. No order, but IMO the best is Varane.

btw Vlady, Spahic doesn't play in La Liga anymore. Hyypia signed him for Leverkusen.

I know this, I didn't even say that he still plays in La Liga. I said he 'was'.

I dont think Pique was ever close to being a worldclass cb in la liga. Its just when he was considered to be worldclass, the collective pressure that Barca posed on other team was much higher intensity than what they did in the Pep era. Thus ensuring that the defence was much more stable than it is now. Pique is just a liability waiting to happen, just like Ramos.

In terms of individual quality in no particular order...

Miranda, Varane, Pique (yes, Pique), Martinez, um, I don't know, possibly Godin?! Seriously, the league really doesn't have much quality centre backs to choose from.

You guys are talking like other leagues are plastered with centerback talent. Which world class defenders are playing in Serie A right now, a league which is traditionally known for their defensive talent? Excluding Juventus I don't see much. Milan is a top 3 team and they have Mexes and Zapata in their backline. And Bundesliga? You have Hummels who is a poor man's Pique, Subotic who is solid, Dante who is making mistake after mistake in the past 6 months, including every final he participated in and then a couple of okay talents like Papadopoulos and Höwedes.

DL seems to be the best of the worst right now, although the fact that David Luiz is considered one of the better defenders there shows us in what a shitty centerback era we live in. No wonder Barcelona couldn't find a proper centerback during the whole summer.

You have to come to the conclusion, that all centerbacks bar 2 or 3 in the world will make half a dozen obvious errors during the season. Its going to happen.

However, thats no excuse for Barcelona not signing one. Sorry, that doesnt fly.

Not when your talking about having Adriano's and Busquets as back up.

As for Serie A, Juve have 4 of the best in the league in Bonnuci, Barzagli, Chiellini, Ogbonna. Napoli have Cannavaro, Roma have Benatia, Inter have Campagnaro, Fiorentina have Rodriguez. Milan should've reinforced, but we didn't and now we will pay the price. So it's not like there isn't quality outside of Spain.

On topic:

I'm curious about Varane. I haven't seen him play regularly, but it seems odd to suggest that one so young is the league's best CB at the moment...? Neutral fans please respond.

Bundi has a ton too. Dante, Hummels, Martinez, Howedes, Wollscheid, Subotic, Toprak, Santana, Naldo, etc.

Even Ligue 1 has quite a few in Silva, Marquinhos, Alex, Abidal, Nkoulou, Zouma, Abdennour, Isimat-Mirin, etc.
