Ins't 'Soccer' just a nickname for 'Association Football'?

Anyways, I'm of Iranian and Danish heritage, but I only support the Danish NT. I can't really support the Iranian team since I haven't lived there for all my life and know the whole culture, like I know the Danish.

I support two national teams, I guess. First is definitely the US, because I'm American. In any match between the US and any other country, I get my jingoism on. (Like OP I'm a liberal guy otherwise.) But to be honest I don't really follow the USMNT super closely or anything ... if it's not a competition with something at stake, I don't go out of my way to watch matches. The other NT I support, which is a close second, is Germany, because I lived there as a kid for a few years and learned to play football there. It's an awesome time to support them now, but I was cheering for them back in the '90s and early '00s too, when they were of course still good but there wasn't a ton of sexy stuff on the pitch. And the 2002 WC quarterfinal between US and Germany remains one of the most agonizing matches I've ever watched, and the only big Germany victory I've seen that didn't make me happy.

Also there's actually nothing wrong with the word 'soccer.' Aversion to the word just comes from ignorance of where it actually came from. This is one of my pet peeves that stems from a weird inferiority/superiority complex that fans of the game have long had in the US. I think that when Americans speak to other Americans about the sport, it sounds more affected to constantly say 'football' instead of 'soccer.' But I personally say 'football' if I'm speaking to a more international crowd and the context is clear.

Also, people should stop saying that "the whole world" calls the sport football. In Italy, it's calcio.

could care less if you call it soccer/football.....but calcio translates to football...so they still call it football.

Well I thought it actually was etymologically derived from the word for kicking, which means it's not "foot + ball."

But anyway, by your rationale you could say that soccer (association football) translates to football, so Americans, et al still call it football too.

I'm a third generation English, I have Chinese (Hong Kong) blood from my Grandad on my fathers side.

Naturally I support England, even though they suck balls but was born and bred here so one of those "burdens"..... I do have an affection for China somewhat but it only goes as far as me wanting them to win games and not watch them.

Generally, I support England and the US these days because my parents are from both sides but I only started having a soft spot for USMNT in the past 3-5 years(when they actually started playing decent football).

I would root for Cuba to a certain extent(since mum's partly Cuban) if they actually had a half decent football team Laughing

If it does come down to US vs England in the World Cup I'd root or England 9 times out of 10. The 1 time being if I've been pissed off a lot earlier in the tournament by the English team Laughing

On the players getting things thrown at them, I think the one positive you can draw from that is, Americans are getting more passionate about the sport.

And I'm curious to know if there's anyone whose mum if from one country, dad is from another and grew up in a 3rd country for a while before moving to a 4th. All 4 countries being footballing nations Laughing Now that's some dilemma Laughing

Basically started having a 'soft spot' for them when the US became a relevant football team :coffee:

Of course.

Why would I have a soft sport for a team that were shoite in both talent & passion for football?

So do you dedicatedly follow the US NT now and recognize yourself as 'American' or you're just a casual supporter of them ,only rooting for them in International comps with England taking top priority for you ?

Just curious to know btw.

Mexicans are treated like shit in the US are they not? Makes sense that they would root against them

For me it's all about the country where you grew up.. I was born in the North of Sudan and moved to Canada when I was like 3 years old, I root for Canada in everything.. It wouldn't make sense to me to not root for the country that made me who I am today.. Although my fave footballing NT is Brazil because of the GOAT that is Ronaldo, who got me into footy in the first place, I would still root for Canada whenever they play eachother..

Maybe if my 'people' were treated like shit in Canada, I would identify more with Sudan and root against Canada whenever they face off..

German heritage (with some English - but screw the English) born in Canada, spent time in Germany as a kid, live in Canada. I cheer for Germany and Canada but Canada sucks so I don't think I will ever have a problem deciding between Germany and Canada in a tournament.

That's A) Not actually true and B) Not applicable when talking about El Salvador vs USA.

I'm Catalan born and raised and can't support my nation so I support whichever nation I like the most. In the confederation I supported brasil but I usually go with Argentina.

So you won't support Spain, even though there may be Catalan players in the team?

No, I support whichever team plays vs. Spain.

Spain doesn't let a catalan squad play so I root against them. Catalan players don't represent me when they put a spanish shirt on, the same way a Barça player who was loaned out to another team wouldn't represent me.
