How will Leverkusen Fare This Season
Re: How will Leverkusen Fare This Season
No defence in the World is going to relish playing against Ibra - Cavani not to mention Lavezzi.
PSG could potentially wipe the floor with them

Potentially, yes. But you could say the same about Bayern's attack, and they only managed to score one goal against them.Tomwin Lannister wrote:No defence in the World is going to relish playing against Ibra - Cavani not to mention Lavezzi.

As great as Bayern are, Ibra-Cavani is just ridiculous, plus playing in the league against a team you know well is a whole different scenario from a European match.

Re: How will Leverkusen Fare This Season
Well, I guess the "known enemy" thing is an argument. Otherwise I found it interesting that the Goals for / goals against ratio between PSG and Bayern is almost identical:
PSG: 42:11 in the league, 16:5 in the CL
Bayern: 42:8 in the league, 17:5 in the CL
So you can't say PSG's attack is shipping more goals than Bayern's and thus they'd be more dangerous to Bayer. ^^

You guys are in for a reality check. Leverkusen couldn't contain Welbeck, Cavani is going to destroy them.

Well Bayern are the best team going right now, no question. But in terms of the actual attack, and who the Leverkusen defence will be matching up with. They're going to be up close and personal to Ibra and Cavani.
Definitely a lot worse than being asked to do a job on Mandzukic, as much as I rate him.

This is the third time they lost to a relegation fodder. Jeez. It's ok if you lose to teams like Munich, Dortmund or in-form teams like BMG, Wolves. But thrice they lost to teams who were pure crap.

Well, that's the problem with the Bundesliga. Even relegation fodder can beat top teams (if the latter aren't called Bayern München, that is).

Not even Hyypia can save this mentally weak club. Needs to jump the sinking ship. Think he's be fantastic in PL, Hyypia will.

Perhaps. But for a team that has less quality than Everton, Southampton, Newcastle; the manager should have some slack.
Anyway, having lead Schalke by 6-12 points for most of the season Leverkusen is now 4th, 6 points behind Schalke. Even if they manage to hold on to this position, I doubt they will qualify for CL proper as they are likely to face some strong team in the play-off round. However, seeing how they could let slip a hefty advantage, their three points sway is hardly a cushion and I have started to fear the worst.

Re: How will Leverkusen Fare This Season
I feel Hyypiä has done excellently there for long enough to have given reason to believe he can be a manager at the top level. However, their collapse in 2014 is a really bad one and if they don't finish in the CL spots after the first-half of the season they had, it will have been a failure of a season (and they might even sack him )

Re: How will Leverkusen Fare This Season
Qualifying for CL would seem like a trophy now. Considering the array of teams they (Arsenal, Napoli, Bilbao, Lille, Porto) might face in the play-off, it's really going to be very hard.

Re: How will Leverkusen Fare This Season
Well, let's see what Roger Schmidt can do with them. At Salzburg he managed to punch well above his weight in the EL (until they ran into Basel and Yann Sommer, that is), so we'll see what he can do with Leverkusen's potential.

Re: How will Leverkusen Fare This Season
They have lost some very decent players, no idea if have bought any quality players, their new manager has been managing in 2nd/3rd tire teams until recently, teams like Schalke or Wolves seems to have settled down; so what do you expect from them!!!
As mentioned earlier, qualifying for CL would be a great thing for them.

Re: How will Leverkusen Fare This Season
They hired Roger Schmidt, and his RB Salzburg raped the Austrian league FWIW.
But.. it's his teams playing style that caught the eye. They played like Dortmund on roids. They beat Bayern, 3-0 and Pep called them the most intense team he's ever seen.
I'm not sure if he's implementing the same style at Leverkusen though.

Re: How will Leverkusen Fare This Season
When did they beat Bayern!!!
German League is much, MUCH stronger than Austrian League. Also Red Bull were stronger than their competitors while Leverkusen has some do deal with 6-7 pretty good teams.
Leverkusen needs a stronger squad and only then a manager can do some thing with them.

It's also worth mentioning the thumping they gave Ajax, swamped them and finished a two legged tie in effectively half an hour. Easily the most entertaining team to watch in Europe last year, they were unfortunate to crash out against Basel in a tie in which the momentum swung wildly throughout.

They were not unfortunate to crash out against Basel. They came up against Yann Sommer in beast mode (they scored at least one goal in the last 61 matches until they finally met their master)dostoevsky wrote:Easily the most entertaining team to watch in Europe last year, they were unfortunate to crash out against Basel in a tie in which the momentum swung wildly throughout.
