Sky Sources: West Ham agree deal with Liverpool to sign Andy Carroll on permanent basis.
I guess that's that. .
Ironic that when the thread was created i was the only thinking that he would be the one we would buy and now i am the one reporting his departure 1st

James Pearce @JamesPearceEcho
Papadopoulos is #LFC's top defensive target this summer. Very highly-rated. Club no longer looking at Swansea's Ashley Williams.
Well thank god for that

Guys, do you know anything about our transfer budget being £20 million plus whatever we get from selling players! I read something like this (probably goal.com) some weeks ago.

Re: Summer Transfer Window 2013
Its a miracle that we are supposedly getting that much for Carroll given West Ham aren't exactly financially strong now or historically. Our expected bids ranged from 10-12 max as 15 is a godsend and frankly, a bit more than what he is actually worth.
I love Andy and will continue to support his endeavours yet I hope Liverpool secure this supposed bid as large scale losses were inevitable.
We won't get this much money for Carroll anywhere else. Mark my words

Re: Summer Transfer Window 2013
I read from Tony Barret that if Toure comes he'll be on 45k/week, and because Rodgers wants some experience. Plus, our scouts from City have hailed his professionalism and think he'll be great around all the young CBs we have /will buy.
He'll be a depth CB at 45k/week, IF it happens. Not exactly a disaster. If that helps us get someone like Papa instead of Williams, then I'm all for it.

Re: Summer Transfer Window 2013
As previously discussed between McAgger and I, it seems like the plan now is to bring in Kolo as an experienced squad player (and potential mentor for the younger players) as well as a younger CB who can compete for the first team place with Skrtel... or replace him (12m for Skrtel, 12m for Papa?).
Some Bosnia news source has quoted Begovic as stating he wants/expects to join Liverpool in time to beginning the preseason training with the rest of the squad on July 10th, and that the deal is done but for signatures, and is contingent on Reina leaving for Barca (i.e. if Reina decides to leave, we'll almost immediately sign Begovic as the deal is in place, but if Reina doesn't leave Begovic won't be signed).

Re: Summer Transfer Window 2013
I know this has already been discussed at length, but this story in particular comes from the Echo, lending a good deal of credibility to it.
http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-fc-plan-12m-kyriakos-3902111
So that makes things more clear on our plans... we're targeting 3 CBs of varying level of development and experience as well as differing strengths and style.
Agger
Papadopoulos
Skrtel*
Kolo Toure
Ilori
Kelly
Wisdom
There's some very good depth and variety there, even if we opt to sell Skrtel.

Liverpool FC are set to launch a £12million bid to sign Schalke centre-back Kyriakos Papadopoulos.
The Reds have identified the 21-year-old Greek international as their No 1 target to replace Jamie Carragher.
Physically strong, comfortable in possession and dominant in the air, Papadopoulos has jumped above Swansea City's Ashley Williams and Ajax's Toby Alderweireld on the club's wish list of centre-backs.
The ECHO understands Liverpool are no longer interested in Williams with the Welsh club's £12million price tag for a player who turns 29 in August leading to them pursuing other options which provide better value.
As well as making a move for Papadopoulos, boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to further bolster his defensive options by completing deals for Manchester City's Kolo Toure and Sporting Lisbon's Tiago Ilori.

I like that very much. If what Sepi said about Toure's wages is true then I don't mind at all. Getting both Papa and Ilori is a dream summer at CB

Oh ffs, just because he hasn't played in CL means he's inexperienced?
He's not a leader? Please go.. that's why he captains both club and his country.
When you're paying such an amount of money, pressure is obliged to get to you. And the jump from Germany to England is pretty big. He'll require 3-4 seasons to adapt itself. I don't believe in wasting so much of budget on a single player.. the risk involved is huge.
Pretty much, yes. We need to buy experience so we can play in Europe. So why would you honestly go out and go find a player who's never played in Europe in his life? He's rated just where he's at - he's a mid-table defender at best. Unless we want to stay in mid-table territory, he shouldn't be signed.
And he's not a leader. Captain means f*ck all for the NT teams and he's only captain at Swansea because Monk (the real captain) is past it and can't get a game. He's not captain material - he's a lot like Vermaelen in terms of "he's been here for a while, we'll let him have it".
How is the jump from Germany to England big? They (the Bundesliga) have a just as good, if not better league than the BPL. We're not exactly wasting our whole budget, are we? We do need to improve the defence first and foremost. Papa would do that.

Re: Summer Transfer Window 2013
Don't see the hype for Kolo Toure. He's nothing special. I can see why we'd want to go for "experience" but I don't feel Kolo Toure is that. We don't need experience around Agger, Enrique and Johnson. Hell, even Lucas will help out defensively and Skrtel isn't that bad of a player. Kolo TOure pretty much lost all his form after he suffered from malaria and hasn't been the same player since.
Losing Carragher and Skrtel (it's inevitable) for Papadapolous and Kolo Toure. Don't think we've improved - in fact we've probably regressed. Papadapolous is class but Toure is average at best. I think many people don't understand how the culture in the dressing room would be a lot different with Jamie gone also. So not only do we lose quality on the pitch, we lose some of the culture off it too.
Come on McAgger, you've said you've only seen Ilori play once against us in the NextGen series. How can you say it's a dream to have him here? Papa I can understand, but Ilori not so much. (Nothing against him as a player, I don't even know what type of defender he's at, but surely he's not a "dream" to have here.)
A large chunk of that would go for operational costs and to the wage budget, I imagine.
We should still have a 30-40m budget with that said.*
*That includes sales.
