Why doesnt Marcelo play rightback?
I dont understand why he doesnt play rightback. That would fix Real's rightback problem, and then Coentrao can keep his place on the left. Isnt Marcelo also right footed? Is there a reason he doesnt play on the right?

Re: Why doesnt Marcelo play rightback?
Still, no one has answered my question. Whether hes right or left footed doesnt matter. Why cant he play rightback?
I dont know specifics about him like whether hes left or right footed because i dont watch La Liga so i only see Madrid in Classicos on live streams and CL.

Re: Why doesnt Marcelo play rightback?
Marcelo is left footed but the idea of him playing rightback isn't one that hasn't been brought up before. Marcelo is talented I seriously think he could play anywhere and be some what decent especially when he has the ball but here's why it doesn't happen.
At left back Marcelo already cuts in to the center meaning he doesn't usually overlap. He only overlaps when Cristiano is 1v1 on the wing vs a parked bus. If the other team isn't completely parking the bus he drifts inside leaving Ronaldo space to run into.
Now I'm sure you're saying surely he can do that on the right as well? He could drift central and now he'd even be a goal threat because he can shoot with his left. There is a problem with that though, while our left back has to drift inside a bit to give Ronaldo room to operate our right back has to stay wide in order to stretch the pitch. Di Maria or Ozil depending on who is playing on the right is going to cut inside, having our right back drift inside as well would be silly because then we'd have zero width. Granted our current rightbacks aren't offensive power houses but you have to have a body there at least if only to not allow space to be exploited. Marcelo is left footed so asking him to stay wide at rightback isn't going to be effective because he won't be able to cross as effectively as Essien (who isn't great but is good enough all things considered).
If we wanted to move Marcelo or Coentrao to right back for us to keep our shape all our wide players would have to swap flanks completely.
We have Arbeloa, Essien and Ramos as RB options. Not perfect but keep in mind all that we ask our RB to do is stretch the pitch and make sure that the other team has no space to run into on the right flank.

Re: Why doesnt Marcelo play rightback?
He's left footed, however we haven't tried him at RB, it may be a decent idea.
However I usually prefer if fullbacks play on the side of what foot they are. That way they can overlap better, cross etc.

Re: Why doesnt Marcelo play rightback?
He isn't exactly a Maldini when defending at LB so playing him on his weaker foot won't help.
We have a problem with our rightback because Arbeloa doesn't give us anything upfront. Playing Marcelo will solve that problem, but create another.

Re: Why doesnt Marcelo play rightback?
I think top level players nowadays like him can play anywhere, even if left footed Although obviously Mou would know if he can and would have done so if suitable.

Re: Why doesnt Marcelo play rightback?
Marcelo is a rare breed of full backs that can use both feet but prefers his left foot. Anyway, as insane as this thread is, Marcelo has issues as a left back, putting on the right hand side would just make things worse.

Marcelo doesn't play rightback.... because he's a leftback
Buffon doesn't play striker because he's a goalkeeper and Matri doesn't play football because he has a good looking girlfriend and stone feet

Re: Why doesnt Marcelo play rightback?
well to be honest, marcelo or any player could step into that ghost of a position lead by arbeloa and do better. loads better.
and its not like madrid didnt try coentrao at rb a few times, so its not unheard of.
i know lots of madrid fans considered the idea when coentrao first signed.
