Players and the national anthem
It always nice to see the players proudly sing the national anthem but does the ones who don't sing at all bother you ?? or you just don't care.
Karim Benzema recently : '' I love the national team - I don’t understand how anyone can question that. It’s a dream to play for France, but nobody can make me sing. I've never sung. I don’t see the problem. [France legend] Zinedine Zidane didn’t sing the national anthem either. There are fans in the stadium who don’t sing. What’s important is that we’re united. ''
Many fans reactions could be sum up like this : '' He doesn't understand, it is not a matter of desire but a symbol. If you do not sing you give the impression of hating institutions of your country and your country at the same time. we do not even ask him to learn the words, but moving lips to show he is French, but that he can't understand. Re: Players and the national anthem
some players just look dumb and stupid when they don't do it
in the Olympic welsh players did not sing the British anthem
but Andy Murray Sang it till the end and see the support he go in the final, so much,
some scottish sailor who won gold started crying while singing the British anthem, and from the way they talk you can tell that "fake hate" is not there..
singing an anthem is very motivating but God knows why some people can't take politics out of football

Re: Players and the national anthem
sorry correction..
It was Chris Hoy that cried when he won Gold, he is scottish cyclist not sailor
and he sang "God Save the Queen" with pride, but some junkies in the British football team decided not to sing, and they wondered why they looked so blunt

Re: Players and the national anthem
It does look odd when you see almost the entire squad singing apart from 1-2 players. And it is always highlighted when its a player like Benzema, Ozil, Boateng, etc. who arent actually from the country.
To me it doesnt matter. When I played back in the day I wouldnt sing the anthem either.
Doesnt mean I dont love my country.

Everyone has the right to sing or not sing, like or dislike an anthem.
Singing an anthem is a political statement as much as not singing it.

Does the fact of not signing or refuse to sing a sign of direspect ?
I mean , a player should know that Perception and Reality are almost the same when you are a public figure. When you see the face of some players during the anthem ... I personnaly don't care but i like when they are at least smiling .. i mean i'd like to be there as many of us.

IMO the guys are there to play football. If they would want to sing, they could sign up for some pop idol casting show ^^

Re: Players and the national anthem
Platini didn't sing it. Zidane didn't sing it. I don't see why it's such a big deal that Benzema sings it.
A lot of the dual nationality French players love the country of France but think the French system is highly prejudiced.... and they're right. I know for a fact that you can't make certain universities or get certain jobs unless you last name is "french".
People are free to sing or not sing the national anthem in France... and that's fine by me. As long as you don't commit treason or break a law, you're free to do as you wish.

Re: Players and the national anthem
I'm sorry, I'm not particularly fond of singing the national anthem myself, and frankly, I wouldn't do it either, especially as there are nowadays microphones all over the place only waiting for the players to embarrass themselves.aleumdance wrote:common rwo.

Re: Players and the national anthem
I personally would prefer a player did sing the anthem it shows that you want to be there and are proud of where you grew up/live/were bron. From that stand point yeah I get why some people would hate on players/athletes who didn't sing.
At the same time though forcing someone to sing is stupid because it defeats the purpose of an anthem in the first place. So long as the player is respectful and obviously wants to be there I don't think it's a big deal.
The real issue in France is much more sinister than merely singing the anthem imo. Some people have a problem with Benzema and players like him and I don't think singing the anthem is the reason.

Don't see the big deal tbh, yeah they probably should sing it but if they don't no big deal as long as they know the words etc don't see why it would be such a big problem.

Doesnt mean I dont love my country.
#1) Boateng is born in Berlin, his mother is German, Özil is born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, both his parents have the German citizenship, so they very much are from the country.
#2) I still understand what you mean, they got a migration background.
#3) I would love if everybody sang the anthem, since it's a great way to get the team spirit up and get everybody amped.
#4) I wouldn't sing it either if I was an immigrants kid, especially if I happened to be brown. Immigrants and their kids are treated like shit by the conservatives and their like in Germany. So even if I loved living in Germany, and felt Germany, I wouldn't endorse anything about the establishement, that constantly makes it harder for people with mixed heritage to get their relatives into the country, get citizenship etc. etc. - Germany is a multicultural state, yet the ruling party still acts like we are some kind of white country club, and everybody brown and/or non-Christian doens't belong. Just look at Klose and Podolski, they're treated as perfectly German because they're white and come from areas that used to be German in the past, yet they're both born abroad, while players like Khedira, Özil, and Boateng are "the foreigners" even though they were born within Germany, with a German passport. It's ridiculous.
Wouldn't sing that damn anthem if I were them as well.

Re: Players and the national anthem
A player shouldn't need to sing a song or make some form of political statement to prove he is of a certain nationality. Why does a player need to sing to show that he's proud and wants to represent?
Personally, if I were representing England, I wouldn't sing God Save the Queen. I don't care about the Queen and not being a religious person, I wouldn't ask God to save her or send her victorious. That wouldn't make me any less English nor less proud to represent England.
Everyone should just have an anthem with no lyrics. That would save a lot of bother.

Re: Players and the national anthem
The funny thing is there are many native who don't sing their national anthem but it much more easier to talk about an immigrant's chil not singing it.
