CL place vs winning EL?
The former takes into consideration how much effort you put into going far in the tournament, the latter concerns winning EL but missing out on CL football next season.

Depends on which team you are. If you think you aren't realistically going to win the CL, then winning the Europa League is probably the better option.

Re: CL place vs winning EL?
Financially, I think you'd be better off in CL if you got past group stages. Not to mention that the prestige and notoriety of the club would be greatly enhanced (I'm assuming this is a team like Tottenham, Napoli, Valencia, etc. who are often on the borderline between CL and EL qualification). Not to say that there's no prestige and notoriety in being an EL winner, but it will always be the second rate competition that it was designed to be. Regular CL football, if sustained, can be a huge boost to a club.

Yeah, I'm talking about all teams outside the top 2.

Re: CL place vs winning EL?
just qualifying in the group stages of the CL will bring more money than winning the EL. Im not sure about this figure but i read somewhere that teams earn 1/10th of what they will be getting for reaching each equivalent stage in the Champions League. Not a good deal

Re: CL place vs winning EL?
CL place.
Tottenham and other similar teams want to make that CL spot theirs. That can only happen if you are in the CL, making the big bucks from the CL, and getting CL quality players (which will come if you are in the CL).
CL qualification can lead to bigger and better things. Winning the EL is awesome, but the payout compared to the CL is dismal and it's not going to keep your best players around, nor help you attract the players you want if your challenging for a CL place.

Re: CL place vs winning EL?
Europa League pays much less than CL
For example, if you are in Semis of EL you get paid less than if you are in round of 16 in CL

Just make the EL winner/finalists get automatic CL group stage qualification.

Re: CL place vs winning EL?
If I recall well there was an article about Chelsea mounting up 55million euros for their CL win in total, that's quite an amazing sum (probably included the CL match tickets and even TV rights, but still)
Anyways I've always thought even the CL group stage can bring more money and fame than (let's say) a quarter final in EL.

@Collblanc
You need to take the TV pool into account, too. IIRC, Schalke got around 10 mio Euros from the Euro League 2011/12 despite going out in the QF due to their part in the TV pool.

Re: CL place vs winning EL?
and some people still wonder why italians don't care about the EL, Uefa should really find a way to make the El more interesting, like giving the semifinalist in the EL the possibility to play in the the first qualifying round of The CL...

Why should they have to? maybe you should stop caring about money and finishing in the magnificent 3rd place with the magnificent diamond encrusted trophy that comes with it.... oh wait.
As for the topic, i'd rather win the EL. Much rather win a trophy than win some money.

Only Manu and Chelskie had better/higher market pool than Milan, but what does it really mean?

Re: CL place vs winning EL?
This thread sums up what's wrong with football these days that an arm-chair Spurs fan, whose team has barely ever won ANYTHING in the past decades, says no to a European TROPHY.
CL can lead to better things.....what are those better things in the end? WINNING A TROPHY

What does the market-pool column represent?
My english isnt that great but ill try to explain.
50% of the marketing pool are the 'rights' sales. Around 25% goes to UEFA, 75% to the clubs. Half of this 75% is divided to the performance of the clubs. The other 50% is divided to the clubs that has most viewers. so bigger clubs (see file) get more money. it can be very unfair. For example, Bate plays the game more pretty then Porto, yet more people watch Porto because of the name.
