to answer ur question, the same can be said for arbeloa at lb since arbeloa is a rb. we put arbeloa at lb and it works believe it or not defending wise. however he cant attack like he wud in rb when in lb...

Considering Arbeloa's mixed success in lb, I think Coentrao has as good a chance in rb as does arbeloa in lb. though i have my doubts...

though if the point for signing coentrao is his attacking qualities and for those qualities be put at rb, then it is madness. look at arbeloa case.

He has all the physical tools to do it frankly: Stamina, speed and work rate. But does he want to defend? Willing to learn how to defend? Learn the techniques requires to defend? Become tactically proficient enough to play team defense?

I think it's a big "no" to those questions. He's not tactically aware right now... imagine if he had to change positions.

And speed is now the only thing you need as a fullback? Arbeloa and Ramos still wins Di Maria in most defensive abilities. Speed, dribbling and tracking back doesn't not equal a good fullback. If Di Maria can't even handle the CM position (in World Cup) then what hope he has as a fullback?

He dosent have none, Ofc i do not support the Idea that Di Maria should be as a rb lol, Thats why we are getting Coentrao.
Ive noticed that during the World cup play, he was quite often caught in defensive areas, worth mentioning is the RB position frankly.

We might as well stick Ronaldo as LB since he's fast too...

Regardless you say Marcelo was able to become a LB after playing LW, but thats because Marcelo was originally a LB anyway and he only played LW that season because 1. Juande Ramos is an idiot and 2. We were plagued with injuries

to say marcelo is way worse that di maria because of di marias performance in one part of one match is an absolute joke.

maybe moving di maria to RB would finally show people how many times he gives the ball up because clearly people are not aware of it when he gives it up in our attacking third. imagine di maria losing the ball as many times as he does but in OUR defending third.

would be the end of real madrid.
