Marrone out of Italy U-21 squad

Juventus’ Luca Marrone has pulled out of the Italian Under-21 squad on Monday because of injury.

The midfielder, who is being used as a centre-back this term by the Old Lady, was originally included in the party for Tuesday’s friendly against an Italy B side.

Marrone has returned to Turin because of a left ankle complaint.

He’s the second player to withdraw from Devis Mangia’s party after Riccardo Saponara of Empoli was also ruled out with fitness issues.

The latter has been replaced by Sampdoria midfielder Roberto Soriano.

Isn't Marrone 22? Thats a bit old for the Under 21's rite?!

Think you can play for the U-21's until you are 23..

Motta played in the U-21 European Championships in 2009 when he was 23.

To be eligible for the campaign ending in 2011, players need to be born in or after 1988. Many can be actually 23 years old by the time the finals tournament takes place; however, when the qualification process began (late 2009) all players would have been 21 or under
