Speaking of 6'8, where is the dude who played for Valencia I think and then Birmingham bought him and he played Arsenal in the CC Final?
I think his last name began with a "Z"?
I thought he had potential but don't know what happend to him and can't remember his name since he took the drop with Birmingham.

Yep, that's it. Wow he still plays for Birmingham. I would have thought he would have been gone when they dropped.
I know a lot of teams in the first division of a bunch of leagues that could use him but good for Birmingham to be able to hold onto him.

Think he feels at "home" at Birmingham. He is well liked by the fans and is getting decent salary too. Maybe he may move in a year or two if Birmingham stays in the Championship

Re: Fast Tall Footballers?
I can instantly think of a couple of defenders who have a very high top speed, like Boateng, Höwedes, Hummels, and Badstuber, who all, statistically, clock in at a higher top speed than CR7, acceleration is a whole different issue, though...

Well speaking of someone who has seen Bron in person over 20 times in playoff and regular season games live, I think you would struggle to find many football players to keep up with him.
Some people don't realize it and it's hard to appreciate unless you see him live because the court is much smaller and TV doesn't do him justice but from baseline to baseline he is one of if not the fastest people in the NBA.
It's astonishing. No offense to anyone as I know some people will take offense but football doesn't have an athlete like Lebron right now, if you got him out on a pitch where he could really start going and not be contained by the size of an NBA court you would be floored. I mean the NBA has never seen anyone like him either, he's 6'8, 265 and runs like a cheetah.
It's really a site to see. I always wished he would give other sports a try like Deon or Bo Jackson etc.
Of course in American football guys like Chris Johnson who run a 4.24 40 are faster but then again there not 6'8, 265 to go with it.

Anywho, yes Lebron is fast but he would certainly not have the stamina to show us his speed, least in my opinion.

Re: Fast Tall Footballers?
lebron is extremely quick and athletic. He's also very agile too, but he i doubt that he can turn a sharp angle while running like Ronaldo or Messi. Sure, he can dribble and cross over, or spin, but that's completely different from football

We're talking about athleticism, not football. Just admit basketball have better athletes then football.. its true.

A few seasons ago Lucio was quite pacey and I think he's about 6''3 . Varane, Balo and Jerome Boateng are also fast and tall footballers.

that's what you are talking about, if that's the topic then the thread wouldn't be here. he made a valid point there, these guys need a completely different fitness. they would never endure the physical exposure of a professional football match combined with the concetration that is required, which Dwight Howard also admitted. On another note, american football wide-receiver Chad Johnson aka Ochocinco also started playin football for a while and was completely drained after a relatively short time.
apparently your definition of athletic is the one of basketball-athleticism. the term has to be seen in the context in which its' used. of course it looks awesome when pumped up giants jump a meter into the air but many of their physical traits are redundant in football. Özil puts heavy emphasis on not gaining too much muscle during his workouts so he does not use his shiftiness for example.

That most certainly is not true. Athlete's train in completely different ways for different sports. A basketball player could not handle the rigors of 90 mins in football. They would be spent by the end of the first half, at the latest. Likewise, most footballers could hadn't the contact and explosive strength needed in a basketball game. Don't even get me started on sports like Hockey, American Football and Rugby. Elite athletes only become elite, because they tailor their training, and subsequently their bodies, to their specific sport. It's not a question of more athletic. It's a question of better suited to the individual sport.

Re: Fast Tall Footballers?
The kicker for tall players always is acceleration, the top speed of most tall players is pretty good, but there are very few who accelerate quickly as well.
