Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has admitted that he began the new Premier League season seven pounds heavier than the end of last season, after enjoying a summer holiday with alcohol and no training.

The England international has published a book entitled 'My Decade in the Premier League' with excerpts of his biography being published in the Daily Mirror.

The striker admitted: "I'm like most blokes, I put on a few pounds after a holiday.

"Even if I don't train for a week, I put on two or three, but when I get back to Carrington [Manchester United's training ground] for the first day of work, I'm in for a shock.

"The scales in the club gym tell me I've put on a few more pounds than expected - seven. Seven!

"Then I remember - I drank a few bevvies [beverages] while I was away. I'm stocky. I'm not like Ryan Giggs, all bone and lean muscle."

"As a striker I need to work hard all the time. I need to be sharp, which means my fitness has to be right to play well. If it isn't, it shows."

Rooney's boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, admitted that his striker needs to take care of himself, but defended his player's attitude towards fitness.

"Wayne is no Ryan Gigs," Sir Alex acknowledged. "Ryan has never put a pound on in his whole life.

"Wayne is a boy that needs games, you can see that from the frame he's got. He is stocky, strong and really needs games, simple as that

He has great strength.He also has good acceleration.Anyway, i'm confident Rooney will be in great shape when he will come back on the pitch and he will score many and spectacular goals like the last season. .

He's always been fat. But that never holds him back because he is still very quick and acrobatic

I would not be surprised if Rooney is slimmer than the people who call him fat

It seems like fat players can often really good despite their obesity. Bendtner's beeing terrorised in the Italian Media for being fat right now so perhaps it's a good sign.

So we are comparing Maradona's skills to Rooney's ?

I think he was making the point that Diego wasn't exactly slim and it never stopped him being an elite footballer so it shouldn't stop Rooney either.

Yeah, but Maradona is Maradona.

Yes but the calorie monster doesn't care how good you are at football, if you get too fat you're gonna end up being unable to play at the highest level but Rooney and Maradona are stocky and can/could still play at the top of their own games respectively.

The hell is this about Maradona being overweight as a footballer? he was never a stick, but to call him overweight is laughable

If that's towards me I am not saying he was overweight. But he was more stocky than slim like Rooney is now. Rooney's not actually fat but if you compare him to other footballers he's still stocky.

People have very different body types.. its not totally rooneys fault. It's extremely hard for me to gain weight even though I eat a shit load. Just like Cristiano or Alves for instance. Rooney kinda reminds me of marcelo body type wise

When Rooney was a 16 yr old wonderkid everyone was saying he would be like this a he nears 30 due to his stocky build. It's a fact of life that stockier blokes will put on weight easier, he need's to be aware of that and need's to work on monitoring it. Just as lanky bloke is required to put more effort into muscular growth than most.

I liked Fellaini's match winner against y'all better. Still, what's that got to do with the issue of Rooney's fatness?

Rooney probably needs to pay more attention to his diet now than a few years ago if he wishes to maintain his best form. We'll see if he's motivated to do that.

he was 70kgs at his prime, thats overweight for his height. I also said overweright "as a footballer" since they're expected to be slim
