Well, that's because United have approximately 11 times the market value of Basel (436.7 mio € vs 38.7 mio €) and thus a slightly higher budget too, which means they can easily buy more high quality players. Not every club is as rich as the big ones.

8 a-list defenders plus 5 b-list defenders, don't know who i missed when counting the squad but you are right 29 players.... but thats still alot of defenders lol

Billy Clifford is written as a Defender/Midfielder, on his Wiki it says he has mainly played as a RB but recently started as a midfielder

as for Philip, well just checked his Wiki, it says he is a striker but on goal they had him down as a defender for some reason which confused me

He used to play RB back in the day, can probably still put a shift there but he isn't by no means a defender.
