Coentrao's overall better imo. However Alba is slightly better attacking wise.

nah coentrao is better in every aspect

From what i saw at the Euro's, Coentrao is better is defensively but Alba is better going forward.

But Coentrao was very poor for Madrid and Alba i hadn't watched much.

Going sit on the fence, ( again) until i have seen more.

The Portugl and Benfica version of Coentrao is better.

The Madrid version, I am almost as bad as.

they were both great at the euros.

but club performances are what set them apart by a mile.. alba has been shit for valencia and when coentrao has played LB he has been excellent for madrid and benfica.

overall coentrao is the better player but we will have to see how alba plays for barca.

Coentrao have been terribe for Madrid, while Alba has done very well for himself at Valencia.

Alba has been not been all that great for Valencia, many Valencia fans have questioned his defensive abilities, Alba was for sometime last season, second choice to the French left back Mathieu and only became a permanent fixture when Unai Emery opted for the "two left backs formation". He's good going forward though.

Coentrao though is a pretty similar player ie. a converted winger, but with much better defensive abilities. As far as left backs in la liga go, Marcelo > Coentrao > Alba.

Alba was never second choice.

He started 27 games, came off the bench for 5. That 32 games.

Add in the suspensions he served for his 1 red and 13 yellows that makes up more or less all games.

Everyone knows he cant defend, but that doesnt mean he didnt do well for himself at Valencia.

coentrao has been terrible at madrid as LB? news to me. benfica too?

According to whoscored Alba made 20 appearances as left back in all competitions (excluding Europa and CDR) for Valencia, whilst Mathieu made 24 appearances as left back It seems like the shared minutes for me.

Coentrao wasn't all that bad imo last season.

No Coentrao was very poor in the season just gone.

Not all his own fault tbf to him as he was deployed in midfield and at RB and he's never a midfielder or a RB in a million years but he wasnt that great at LB either.

It's not just against Bayern, he has gave many average/poor performances.

As i said it's not all he's own fault but fact is he did.

I wont comment on Alba because i haven't watched him enough.

He barely played in midfield and at RB.

Coentrao did quite well for me, he provide solidity at left back whenever it was needed, made a few errors but his overall play was excellent, it's a shame he had to compete with an inform Marcelo, which has limited his appearances for Madrid, but he showed the world what he's really made up of with his world class performances at the Euros.

Buddytaller obviously rarely, if ever, saw a Valencia game. Alba played half his games as a left winger last season, with Mathieu playing behind him at left back, they were extremly dangerous together.

thats why he said earlier that they played a 2 LB system to cover their defensive frailties.. madrid did this a few times with coentrao and marcelo.

I hate Coentrao's punchable face, but I really enjoyed his play at Benfica (despite being a Porto can), he was very good there.

But for Madrid he was way below average in my opinion, especially the better the opponants were.

Coentrao is pretty garbage defensively,I have always maintained this stance.

Both him & Alba are good offensively although I think Alba is much better offensively,much as in a solid much not a huge much.

Alba is not that good a defender though. Expectations would be much higher at Barca & he is defensively a huge novice.

Neither I rate very highly for a complete lack of defensive ability

I would take Coentrao easily.

People overrating Alba here, pretty sure a lot of his admirers will come back calling him all sort of names when Di Maria and Ronaldo rape him in the Super Copa, Coentrao is far better defensively than Alba, ask anyone who followed both players keenly last season. It will be a mistake to just judge him only by his 6 games at the Euros.

I also don't see why people are all over Coentrao's performance against Munich at the Allianz arena, I thought he did very well over the 90 minutes and kept both Robben and Lahm silent, made an error during injury time, but that shouldn't wipe off his excellent defending in the 90 minutes. He was again excellent in the Euros against Germany, Spain and the Netherlands despite getting little help defensively from Ronaldo and having defend very often against two opposition players at the same time.

Coetrao over Alba any day, still prefer Marcelo over both though.
