I will be overjoyed, regardless of the outcome.
This honestly couldn't have been planned any better.
Cue forum meltdown.

These - can't touch us. Would liek to see the gypsy start the game, could cause some real havoc off set pieces.
Am worried about Cassano though

Re: Quarter final: England vs Italy discussion
Hodgson must realize it already that England's only consistent way of creating goal-scoring opportunities are crosses and therefore start Carroll ahead of Welbeck.
Just look at the goals England have scored so far in the tournament:
Against France: Lescott header from a set-piece.
Against Sweden: Carroll header and Welbeck scoring from a low cross. Walcott's (a little lucky) shot has been the only goal England haven't scored from a cross.
Against Ukraine: Rooney header from a cross.

Re: Quarter final: England vs Italy discussion
My mindset has gone from "hope we don't embarrass ourselves" to "just glad to be here".
Honestly, if we lose to Italy - which I'm fully expecting to happen - I won't be that bothered. Actually getting to this point is an accomplishment in itself and as I've said before, there is no real shame in bowing out to a better team.
I think, regardless of whether they play 3-5-2 or 4-3-1-2, that Italy will have too much quality for us. We might be able to frustrate them and cause a bit of trouble from set-pieces and crosses, but Italy will easily out-pass us and show how truly average our midfield actually is.

End of the road for England.
Also, Wiggles, Giancarlo, Sciacca and Feverpitch should be unbanned for this epic game.

Italy shouldn't underestimate England at all. Yes we are favorites but still, we kinda struggled vs Ireland too..

Italy Favourites?????
what are you smoking?
The Italy that everyone thought wouldn't make it out of their group?
The Italy who have scandal & World Cup 2010 hanging over their heads?
The Italy who lost Rossi, Criscito & Now Chiellini???
These people don't care about history, if they did, so much people wouldn't run their mouths!
I believe we will win, but we are not the favourites....

Re: Quarter final: England vs Italy discussion
Huh? First, it wasn't a hard group, second, who thought we will crash out? The qualification process was great for Italy, only the last 2 friendlies (which mean nothing) looked pretty bad for us.Cotes wrote:

The squad is really strong so it's expected to get a good result here.
The betting scandal mostly involve lower league teams so it shouldn't really affect our play. And how's 2010 hanging over the head? Ok, it was a disappointing world cup but it's a good time to fix it.
It was much harder for Italy after a WC win in 2008..
And yes, Rossi was a huge blow but in the likes of Balo, Cassano and Di Natale we have enough firepower (on paper). Balzaretti is as good as Criscito so far.
Only Chiellini's loss that worries me much, without him the defense doesn't look so organized.

Re: Quarter final: England vs Italy discussion
italy are nothing special and are overrated.
I am confident England will beat them.
Should be a good game.
-----
@ Arte....Carroll maybe good in the air, but he offers nothing else. He has a poor touch, his hold up play is non existant and he makes England play a more direct hoof ball tactic. He did very well to take his header v Sweden, but v a defensive team like Italy, England will need to keep the ball in ground and unlock them via quick link up play......+ direct crosses, both options in which welbeck and Rooney excell at (as proven for United)
With Welbeck, England have more to offer up front. Welbeck was quite v Ukraine today due to England's deep lying CM'ers and the fact that England's wingers are really poor. He has to feed off scraps. But deliver a good ball in the box, like v Sweden, and you see that bit of improvisational play that is needed at the top level. Plus his close control and passing is better suited to partner Rooney.
