France 2-0 Ukraine

Koscielny was an unused substitute for France once more.

England 3-2 Sweden

Walcott came off the bench to inspire an England comeback. The winger scored a screamer and then set up Welbeck's winning goal. Oxlade-Chamberlain came on late.

Lukas Podolski will play his 100th game for Germany against Denmark on Sunday. His sights, however, are set on another milestone - equalling Franz Beckenbauer's 103 appearances during the European Championship.

That would also mean reaching the final of the tournament.

"The goal this summer is not the 100, but the 103 and I am optimistic that it will happen," Podolski said on Friday.

Advertisement: Story continues below
Germany needs only a draw against Denmark in Lviv, Ukraine, on Sunday to win Group B and make sure of staying in Gdansk, their base for the tournament, for the quarter-finals.

The Germans have looked perhaps the most impressive team of the tournament so far, but they will bear in mind a defeat by their northern neighbours in the final of Euro 92.

Denmark has already produced a major upset at this tournament, beating the Netherlands 1-0 in the opener. But they then lost to Portugal 3-2 and must now seek something against Germany to advance.

Germany has won both their matches, edging Portugal 1-0 and the Netherlands 2-1.

"You would think that with two wins, you are through, but that's not the case," Podolski said.

Germany has not won a major tournament since their third European Championship title in 1996. This gifted generation is eager to finally lift one after finishing third in the past two World Cups and losing the Euro 2008 final to Spain.

"The only thing we are missing is a title to crown our development over the last few years and we want to show here that we can win titles," the Arsenal-bound Podolski said.

Podolski was born in Poland and would like to see his native land reach the quarter-finals, where they could play against Germany.

"That would unfortunately be the end of the road (for Poland)," said Podolski, who scored twice against Poland at Euro 2008.

Podolski turned 27 on the day Germany arrived in Gdansk on June 4 and was warmly received when the team conducted an open training session before 10,000 people.

He made his debut for Germany in 2004 and has scored 43 goals in 99 games. Although nominally a forward, he has been playing on the left flank at Euro 2012 since coach Joachim Loew uses only one central striker.

The lack of a goal has prompted some criticism but Podolski said he was asked to do more defensive duty in the first two games and feels that he has accomplished his job well.

While Podolski will clearly keep his place on Sunday, Germany will be without suspended right back Jerome Boateng.

Denmark winger Dennis Rommedahl and central midfielder Niki Zimling were both injured against Portugal. Rommedahl is almost certainly out of the Germany match with a left hamstring injury. Zimling, with a left calf injury, is also in doubt.

Rommedahl would most likely be replaced by Tobias Mikkelsen and Zimling by Jakob Poulsen.

"The Germans have, just like we do, a really strong team," Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner said. "They work for each other and they have a couple of players who can decide games, and serve up some good balls to the strikers."

However, Bendtner made it clear that Denmark would not be an easy side to beat, and could even pull off an upset.

"We don't give up. We always give 100 per cent," he said. "And if everyone plays at their best, we can come out victorious."

Really?
Two days before that, he said, “Wojciech Szczęsny is our No1 goalkeeper and there is no doubt about that, so there is a chance that he will return for the next game”.

Löw: (on Podolski) "I told him that he can't at any cost leave Lahm on his own against players like Nani and Robben and to be disciplined."
(on the Podolski criticism) "He carried out my tactical instructions well and that is why I'm satisfied with him."
(still not entirely satisfied with him though) "Offensively though there must be more from him."

Netherlands lost 2-1 to Portugal, so they're out of the tournament without a single point.

Van Persie had another disappointing game. He was barely involved and missed one good chance.

It'd be fair to say that van Persie has had a poor Euros. Bar one outstanding goal, he's missed too many goalscoring opportunities and had he taken a couple of them, the Netherlands might have qualified.

In some ways, though, it's not surprising that he hasn't performed to his usual standard, given that this is the first time he's played so many games during one season and that his form wasn't too great going into the tournament anyway.

It's a shame, but now van Persie can get the rest he deserves and we can get his contract situation sorted out one way or another.

Elsewhere, Rosicky and Podolski are still in the tournament, as are Koscielny, Walcott and Chamberlain. Szczesny, Arshavin, van Persie and Bendtner will all be able to participate in our Asia tour this pre-season.

Germany 2-1 Denmark

Podolski played his 100th game for Germany, and scored his 44th goal for his country with a close range right-footed effort. He was replaced after 64 minutes.

Mertesacker was again an unused substitute.

Bendtner started and played the whole game for Denmark. He set up Krohn-Dehli's header with a header himself following a corner.

--------

Holland 1-2 Portugal

Van Persie played the whole game for Holland, but was again disappointing. He really has had a poor Euros.

(Quarter-finals 1 & 2: Czech Rep v Portugal & Greece v Germany)

Update:

Arshavin: 3apps, 0 goals, 3 assists
Bendtner: 3 app, 2 goals, 1 assist
Podolski: 3 app, 1 goal, 0 assists
Van Persie: 3 app, 1 goal, 0 assists
Walcott: 2 apps, 1 goal, 1 assist
Rosicky: 2 apps, 0 goals, 0 assists
Oxlade-Chamberlain: 2 apps, 0 goals, 0 assists
Szczesny: 1 app, 1 conceded, 1 red card
Mertesacker: 0 apps
Koscielny: 0 apps

I think even if he had 10 goals no team would pay 30m for him. The only team is interested in him is Man City I think.

Barcelona and Madrid dont need him.

I do agree now the Media will stop driving us crazy, and hope he can sign a long contract.
